A battlefield study of the 1453 siege, worked on the ground it happened on. The group took the Theodosian land walls at Yedikule Fortress, the Ottoman siege lines and Hagia Sophia, with the sequence of the assault argued out on site rather than in a room afterwards.

Originally scoped for around thirty five and delivered for eighteen. A smaller group changes the shape of a study day rather than shortening it: eighteen people can stand inside the ditch together and still hear each other.

The ground is still there. That is why this study works in Istanbul and not from a map.

A private evening cruise closing a working visit, built around where the group was actually staying rather than where the boat happened to be. Taking the public ferry from the Asian side to meet the boat on the European shore saved an hour of repositioning, and the group was back at the hotel by about half past eight.

A tailor made walking tour that changed size twice before it ran. Two licensed guides rather than one, because a walking group past about fifteen loses its back half, and a whisper audio system so the guide could be heard without raising a voice in a working street.

The group grew after it was booked, and the programme absorbed it.

A conference does not move as one group. Delegates chose between four things happening at once on the same afternoon: a chartered Bosphorus cruise, fishing boats, a Turkish coffee workshop and a session at the Cağaloğlu hammam, with coaches timed to put everyone back where they needed to be.

The cruise filled, which is the useful part. When it did, the fishing option absorbed the overflow rather than anybody being turned away, and the coffee workshop was resized from thirty places to twenty so the spare capacity went where the demand actually was. Six separate dietary requirements were handled across the group, two of them coeliac.

Four excursions, one afternoon, and everybody back in time for the evening.

When Whisper Headsets Help

A whisper headset is a small receiver with an earpiece. The guide wears a light transmitter and talks at an ordinary volume.

Everyone wearing a receiver hears the guide, whether the group is gathered in a courtyard or strung out along a lane. A couple or a family on a private tour has no need for one; headsets are for groups big enough that a normal voice stops carrying.

At Topkapı and Dolmabahçe, the National Palaces visitor rules make headsets mandatory for any guided group of more than eight.

Questions From Group Organisers

About fifteen people. Beyond that, whoever walks at the back of the group stops hearing in Istanbul’s busy streets. When a corporate walking group grew to twenty in 2026, The Other Tour sent it out with a second licensed guide and whisper headsets.

The Tourist Guiding Profession Law and its 2024 regulation set no maximum group size per guide. The travel agency law requires at least one guide per tour of up to 45 people, and a guide in any single vehicle that seats more than 45.

At Topkapı and Dolmabahçe palaces, yes. The National Palaces rules make headsets mandatory for a group visiting with a licensed guide once it passes eight people, and guides may not narrate loudly indoors without them. Hagia Sophia works differently: in January 2024 the foundations office that manages it announced that guides may not explain anything inside, by any method, and visitors listen through the site’s own audio app on earphones. In mosques, Diyanet’s guidance asks visitors not to talk loudly enough to disturb people at prayer.

Some do. Ministry of Culture and Tourism museums, Galata Tower among them, need advance notice and an appointment for groups of 40 or more. The palaces take bookings at least a day ahead, and they close on set days: Topkapı on Tuesdays, Dolmabahçe on Mondays.
