Is a Private Tour Worth It in Istanbul?

Yes, when your time is short or your party has its own pace. When cost decides, a group tour wins.

When a Private Tour Is Worth It, and When It Is Not

A private tour in Istanbul is worth it when time, pace or the people in your party matter more than the cost. When cost decides, a group tour or a day on your own is the better buy.

Worth It When

  • You have a day or two, and more on your list than fits.
  • Someone in your party sets the pace: a toddler, an older parent, a wheelchair.
  • You want to stay longer where you like it and skip what you do not.
  • Your dates land on a closing day, and the plan still has to work.
  • You want the Byzantine and Ottoman layers explained by someone you can question all day.

A Group Tour or Going Alone Wins When

  • Cost decides, and there are one or two of you.
  • You enjoy meeting other travellers along the way.
  • You want the famous sights in a set order, and the group’s pace suits you.
  • You are staying in Sultanahmet and would rather wander with a guidebook.

What an Istanbul Group Tour Includes

Group tours sold online for Istanbul’s old city set limits of eight to twenty people where they name one, and one sold as a small group allows 100. On a Friday, several show you the Blue Mosque from the courtyard only.

The Rules That Shape Any Day in Istanbul

Headsets Past Eight

At Topkapı and Dolmabahçe, the National Palaces’ rules make headsets compulsory for any guided group of more than eight. With us, a couple or a family on a private tour has no need for one.

One Guide for Up to 45

Türkiye’s travel-agency law asks for at least one guide on every tour of up to 45 people. On our private days the group is just you, so nobody at the back misses the story.

Friday Mornings at the Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque lets visitors in only from 2:30 pm on Fridays, and closes for the noon and afternoon prayers. We check your date against both before we plan anything.

Topkapı Closes on Tuesdays

Topkapı Palace is closed every Tuesday, and Dolmabahçe every Monday. So we plan the day around them.

The Grand Bazaar on Sundays

The Grand Bazaar closes on Sundays and religious holidays. If the Grand Bazaar matters to you, we plan it for a day it is open.

Hagia Sophia’s Visitor Entrance

Since January 2024, visitors from abroad enter Hagia Sophia through a ticketed visitor entrance and see it from the upper gallery. Tickets, ferries and timing are ours to sort.

Who Gets the Most From a Private Day

Families With Young Children

We build itineraries around realistic family rhythms rather than forcing everyone through an adult-paced sightseeing schedule. Baby or child seats are available when requested in advance.

Travelling on Your Own

You set the pace and ask whatever you like, all day. Some guests feel more at ease with a female guide: meet five of ours.

A Wheelchair or a Slower Pace

We plan routes, timing, pacing, entrances, surfaces, rest stops and backups, then adapt as the day goes. Wheelchair-assisted tours can include the wheelchair itself.

A First Visit, a Day or Two

There is no fixed itinerary. Tell us what you care about, and the route is built around it.

In Guests’ Own Words

This was the best tour we’ve had in a long time! They totally customized the tour to our family and needs.

I’ve used “The Other Tour” agency twice as a solo female traveler in Istanbul, once in August and again in March. Both experiences were amazing.

Before You Choose a Tour in Istanbul

It is when you want the day shaped around you. On a private tour with The Other Tour the route, the pace and every question are yours.

A group tour costs less if you would rather share the day.

For one or two people, a group tour usually costs less, because group tours in Istanbul sell seats one by one. The Other Tour quotes every private day on its own.

What decides the quote is the length of the day, how many of you there are, the language you need, the season, whether a private vehicle and museum tickets are included, and how senior the guide is.

Partly. Tickets and queues are what Istanbul guests ask The Other Tour about most, so we take both off your hands.

The one line you still join is security, which every visitor passes, guided or not.

Most old-city group tours sold online go inside Hagia Sophia, though on some the ticket is extra and more than a third of their listings do not say either way.

On a private day with The Other Tour, Hagia Sophia is yours to include, and we can arrange the ticket with your day.

Where old-city group tours sold online state a limit, it runs from eight to twenty people, and one sold as a small group allows 100. More than half name no limit at all.

Türkiye’s travel-agency law asks for at least one guide on every tour of up to 45 people. A private tour with The Other Tour is your party only.

Women travelling alone book private days with The Other Tour in Istanbul. One booked twice as a solo traveller, once in August and again in March, and called both days amazing.

If you would feel more at ease with a female guide, say so when you write. For the wider picture, read our guide to safety in Türkiye.

Comfortable shoes first, since much of an Istanbul day is on foot.

For mosques, Türkiye’s Presidency of Religious Affairs asks visitors to come in clothing suited to a mosque, and mosques keep scarves and skirts at the door for anyone who needs to cover up.

Check two licences. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s agency register shows whether an agency’s licence is valid: The Other Tour’s is 7651, registered to Before Travel. TUREB’s database shows a guide’s licence by name.

Ask for the guide’s name before you confirm, which we give you anyway, and read what guests wrote on Google and TripAdvisor. Hiring a tour guide in Istanbul with us runs in four steps.

What We Take Off Your Hands

Tickets and Queues

We can arrange your tickets with your day. Security is the one line every visitor still joins.

Getting Between Sites

Plenty of Istanbul days are better walked. Some are not, and a private vehicle can be part of the plan.

Lunch

Somewhere in the middle you stop and eat, properly, sitting down.

The Weather

Weather is not a cancellation. Istanbul days run in the rain, and a guide who knows the city simply moves the indoor parts of the route forward.

Tell Us Who Is Coming

Your dates, who is coming and what you hope to see. We reply within a day with a route and the name of the licensed guide we would send, and there is no deposit until you are happy with the plan.
