First things first: the Istanbulkart. One rechargeable card covers the metro, tram, ferry and bus for a fraction of single-ticket prices. Machines at the airport metro station sell them; load it once and the city opens up. For a few days in Istanbul it is the best money you will spend.
The Metro, Route by Route
The M11 runs from the airport to Gayrettepe, where the network takes over. The routes travellers actually need:
To Sultanahmet and the Old Town
Take the M11 to Gayrettepe, transfer towards Yenikapı, and finish on the T1 tram to Sultanahmet. Allow up to two hours door to door with waits.
To Beyoğlu and Taksim
M11 to Gayrettepe, then the M2 line runs straight to Taksim. The simplest metro run of the three.
To Kadıköy and the Asian Side
M11 to Gayrettepe, M2 south, then Marmaray or the M4 from Ayrılık Çeşmesi into Kadıköy. It works, but with luggage the bus or a car is kinder.
Taxis, With Eyes Open
Licensed yellow taxis run on a meter whose tariff is set by the city, not the driver: as of the July 2026 update, about 72 TL to start and 48 TL per kilometre, with a 230 TL minimum and no night surcharge. A run to the central districts typically lands between 700 and 1,000 TL with traffic.
The honest caveats: the airport rank queue can pass 30 minutes, and a small minority of drivers freelance with the route or the meter. Apps like BiTaksi and Uber (which books licensed taxis here) show the fare estimate up front and log the trip. If predictability matters more than the saving, skip the rank.
Private Transfers & Beyond
A private transfer means a named driver waiting at arrivals with your name, help with the bags, and a fixed, agreed price to your hotel door. What SRC and psychotechnical mean. A driving licence on its own does not allow anyone in Türkiye to carry paying passengers. The SRC certificate is the vocational qualification for commercial passenger transport, and the psychotechnical report is a periodic assessment of reaction time, attention and perception that professional drivers renew to keep working.
