Duygu Sınırtaş: A Passionate Guide with an Archaeologist’s Eye

Digging Deeper: Unearthing Istanbul's Layers One Story at a Time

If you’re looking for a guide who can take you far beneath the surface—both literally and metaphorically—Duygu is your person. With a background in prehistory, archaeology, and a flair for languages, she bridges Istanbul’s ancient past with its vibrant present. Whether decoding Neolithic ruins or introducing you to the city’s best street food, her tours are as layered as the history she uncovers.

Introduction to Duygu

Born and raised in Istanbul, Duygu Sınırtaş has always been drawn to what lies beneath the surface. A passionate guide and lifelong learner, she combines her academic background in archaeology with a genuine love for her city. Fluent in English and endlessly curious, she helps travelers experience Istanbul through fresh eyes and forgotten stories.

Whether she’s guiding you through ancient ruins, down side streets in Üsküdar, or through the museums of Sultanahmet, Duygu is all about helping you connect with the spirit of the place—not just the postcard views.

Academic Background Rooted in the Past

Duygu studied Prehistory at Istanbul University and Tourism Guiding at Marmara University, blending scholarly knowledge with practical know-how. Her interest in archaeology led her to begin two separate master’s programs—one in Istanbul Studies, the other in Archaeology—which she candidly admits she didn’t finish.

“Two master’s degrees abandoned—zero regrets,” she jokes. But her self-awareness, curiosity, and humility are what make her such a compelling guide.

She also participated in the Tepecik-Çiftlik excavations in Niğde during her university years, with a focus on the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods.

Duygu remains closely connected to the academic community and stays updated on the latest discoveries and historical discourse. Her tours are always evolving, informed by the newest interpretations of Istanbul’s deep and complex past.

Licensed Tour Guide with Real-World Experience

After the COVID-19 pandemic, Duygu got her official tour guide license and hasn’t looked back. She’s now been guiding for over 4 years, leading both local and international visitors through Turkey’s most important historical and cultural sites.

What sets her apart isn’t just knowledge—it’s delivery. Duygu has a calm, honest, and sharp-witted style that makes even the most complex archaeological concepts feel approachable and fascinating.

Multilingual and Multicultural

Duygu’s official guide card lists English as her working language, but she also speaks high-level Korean and intermediate Japanese. This rare language skillset allows her to connect with a broader range of travelers and share Turkish culture with even more nuance.

From Ruins to Stories: A Deep Love for Culture

Duygu is especially passionate about the layers of history you don’t always hear about. She’s the guide who’ll tell you about the women who built Ottoman endowments, the pagan past hidden beneath Islamic monuments, or the silent structures that speak volumes once you know what to listen for.

She’s also someone who appreciates the city beyond its monuments—its street food, its ferry rides, and the small moments that define daily life in Istanbul. Her food and coffee tasting tours have become especially popular among those who want to combine flavor with storytelling.

Favorite Corners of Istanbul

Her personal favorite part of the city? The Golden Horn coastline. With its peaceful waterfront walkways and views of both past and present, it’s a part of Istanbul where she often finds inspiration.

She frequently leads tours around BeyogluandKadıköy, blending history, food, art, and local life on the Asian side of Istanbul.

A Soft Spot for Troia

Although she’s based in Istanbul, Duygu also guides tours across Anatolia. Of all the places she covers, she admits there’s something special about Troy (Troia) that grabs her every time. The myths, the archaeology, the layers—it’s a site she never tires of explaining.

Book Your Tour with Duygu Sınırtaş

Looking to go beyond the clichés and dive into the complexity of Istanbul’s past and present? Duygu is a guide who blends academic expertise with genuine heart. She’s perfect for travelers who are curious, thoughtful, and ready to explore Istanbul through the lens of deep history and real culture.

Reach out to book a tour with Duygu and let her guide you through a version of Istanbul that most visitors never get to see.
