Istanbul‘s vegan scene has grown significantly over the past few years, making it easier than ever to find delicious vegan food throughout the city. Whether you’re looking for traditional Turkish dishes with a vegan twist or modern plant-based cuisine, you’ll find plenty of options.

Table of Contents

Exploring Vegan Delights in Istanbul

Istanbul, a city where history meets modernity, is also a haven for food enthusiasts seeking vegan options. From innovative vegan restaurants in trendy neighborhoods to traditional Turkish dishes that naturally fit a plant-based lifestyle, the city offers a delightful array of culinary experiences.

Food tours in Istanbul offer a wonderful way to explore the city.

Whether you’re strolling through bustling streets, exploring local markets, or dining at cozy cafés, Istanbul’s vibrant food scene makes it easy to enjoy delicious vegan fare. Dive in to discover the best spots and must-try dishes that will satisfy both your palate and curiosity.

Some key points to keep in mind:

Vegan Restaurants and Cafés

Istanbul now boasts a variety of dedicated vegan and vegetarian restaurants. In popular areas like Kadıköy, Cihangir, and Karaköy, you’ll find spots like Vegan Istanbul, Salve Cafe, and Arze offering diverse menus ranging from vegan versions of Turkish classics to international dishes.

Traditional Turkish Dishes

Many traditional Turkish dishes are naturally vegan or can easily be made vegan. For example, you can enjoy dishes like dolma (stuffed grape leaves), mercimek çorbası (lentil soup), ezme (spicy tomato salad), and a variety of vegetable stews and mezes that are typically made without animal products.

Street Food

Vegan-friendly street food is also widely available. Simit (a sesame-crusted bread ring), roasted chestnuts, and grilled corn are popular snacks you can find on nearly every corner.

Supermarkets and Health Food Stores

Health food stores and supermarkets in Istanbul now stock a variety of vegan products, including plant-based milks, cheeses, and snacks. Organic markets in neighborhoods like Bomonti and Feriköy are also great for finding fresh, organic produce and vegan specialty items.

You really shouldn’t have a hard time finding delicious vegan food during your visit to Istanbul. The city’s vibrant culinary scene is continually evolving, with more and more options catering to vegan diets.

5 Vegan Spots

Whether you’re a dedicated vegan or just looking to try something new, here are five of the best vegan spots in the city that you shouldn’t miss.

Vegan Istanbul - Cihangir

Nestled in the bohemian neighbourhood of Cihangir, Vegan Istanbul is a cosy haven for vegans with a home-cooked feel to all their food. This spot is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and an extensive menu featuring everything from local dishes to more regional ones. Their “Vegan Kumpir,” a twist on the classic Turkish baked potato, is a must-try. The café’s commitment to sustainability and veganism makes it a favourite among locals and tourists.

2. Salve Cafe - Kadıköy

Located in the heart of Kadıköy, Salve Cafe is a gem for those who appreciate good food in a laid-back environment. Known for its innovative dishes, this café offers a wide range of vegan options, including delicious wraps, bowls, and freshly squeezed juices. Their vegan dessert selection, particularly the raw chocolate cake, is a hit. Salve Cafe’s focus on local, organic produce adds an extra layer of quality to their offerings. Plus, it’s in Kadikoy, the most fun part of Istanbul!

Arze - Üsküdar

Arze brings the flavors of Lebanon to Istanbul, offering a unique vegan dining experience in the charming district of Üsküdar. This spot is perfect for those who love Middle Eastern cuisine. Their menu includes traditional Lebanese dishes like falafel, hummus, and tabbouleh, all made with fresh, vegan ingredients. The cozy setting and friendly staff make Arze a great place to relax and enjoy a meal with friends.

4.  Bi Nevi Deli - Beşiktaş

Bi Nevi Deli in Beşiktaş is more than just a vegan restaurant; it’s a philosophy of healthy and conscious eating. The menu is a creative mix of international and Turkish-inspired vegan dishes, with a strong emphasis on raw food. Their “Raw Vegan Pizza” and “Zoodle Bowl” (zucchini noodles) are highly recommended. The atmosphere is modern and welcoming, perfect for a casual meal or a quick snack.

Vegan Community Kitchen - Moda (Kadiköy)

This is a vibrant, community-driven space that offers delicious vegan meals with a side of social activism. The menu is seasonal, changing according to the availability of fresh produce, but always full of flavorful, wholesome dishes. Their vegan “Karnıyarık” (stuffed eggplant) is a delightful vegan take on a traditional Turkish dish. The space often hosts workshops and events, making it a hub for the local vegan community.

The Verdict

These five vegan spots in Istanbul showcase the city’s dynamic and inclusive food scene. Whether you’re exploring the historical streets of Cihangir, the bustling lanes of Kadıköy, or the tranquil corners of Üsküdar, you’re sure to find a vegan meal that delights your taste buds. So, make sure to add these places to your itinerary and enjoy the diverse and delicious vegan offerings that Istanbul has to offer.

Great list! I’m planning a trip to Istanbul soon and would love to visit some of these vegan spots. Do you know if any of these places offer gluten-free options too? Also, are any of them open late at night, like past 10pm? Thanks!

Glad you liked the list! Yes, many of these vegan spots, like Veganistanbul and Arze, do have gluten-free options. I’d recommend asking directly since menus can change, but they’re usually very accommodating. As for late hours, some places in Kadıköy, like Salve Cafe, are open until 11 pm, so you should not have too much problem finding something after 10!
