Gulsen Rustemli - Russian and English speaking tour guide in Istanbul

With seven years of active guiding, a Tourism Guiding degree, and absolute fluency in English and Russian, Gülşen Rüstemli welcomes travelers into Istanbul’s heart. Driven by her profound warmth, Gülşen ensures private groups feel instantly at home in her dream city, transforming insightful historical walks into genuine lifelong friendships.

Cultural Immersion through Streets

Gulsen Rustemli Russian Guide 1

The foundation of any profound cultural narrative relies entirely on the individual tasked with translating a city’s past into a living, breathing reality. For Gülşen Rüstemli, understanding the architectural, sociological, and cultural layers of Istanbul is a lifelong passion built on rigorous academic study.

Modern travel demands far more than rote memorization of dates and architectural measurements. It requires highly educated cultural mediators who possess the intellectual depth to interpret complex histories alongside the emotional intelligence needed to connect with visitors from all walks of life.

Gülşen embodies this synthesis perfectly, anchoring her professional practice in a deep well of scholarly knowledge and extensive field experience. Her work transforms every journey into an authentic exploration, driven by a genuine love for the iconic city she navigates daily.

The Academic Rigor of Tourism Guiding

Holding a formal Degree in Tourism Guiding, Gülşen’s educational background provides a deeply structured understanding of Anatolia’s complex heritage. Her training spans the early Neolithic settlements through the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras.

Securing a state-recognized degree in Türkiye requires extensive fieldwork, comprehensive classical archaeology exams, and rigorous study of art history, theology, and geography. This academic pedigree ensures she draws directly upon years of scholarly immersion.

Her background allows her to analyze Istanbul as a living text. When discussing landmarks like Hagia Sophia, Gülşen details its engineering marvels, mosaic theology, and socio-political history, contextualizing the city as a crucial epicenter of human civilization.

Strategic Value of Linguistic Fluency

A crucial component of Gülşen’s profile is her absolute fluency in both Russian and English. Istanbul serves as a vital geopolitical bridge, drawing travelers from both Anglophone nations and the Russian-speaking world. Operating in both spheres elevates her to an international cultural diplomat.

Fluency extends beyond basic conversational competence. A professional guide requires precise vocabulary to explain complex architectural paradigms, nuanced religious histories, and subtle socio-political shifts, all while efficiently managing the logistical demands of urban navigation.

True fluency involves deep cultural translation—understanding the specific humor, norms, and reference points of her guests. This dexterity allows Gülşen to tailor storytelling to her audience’s background, ensuring historical analogies resonate and guests feel complete comfort.

Why She is Perfect Guide for You?

The true metric of a successful travel experience is determined by the quality of human connections formed and the depth of cultural immersion achieved, rather than the sheer volume of sites visited.

Specializing in private groups and individual travelers, she cultivates an environment where rigid boundaries between service provider and client rapidly dissolve.

Discerning travelers increasingly reject mass-tourism in favor of highly bespoke, intimate experiences, and private guiding demands advanced emotional intelligence, stamina assessment, and real-time itinerary agility.

With seven years of dedicated professional experience, Gülşen has mastered both the psychological and logistical demands of private guiding, allowing her to deploy historical facts in a conversational, engaging manner.

Her extensive tenure endows her with an intricate mental map of Istanbul, knowing instinctively how to avoid crowds, when to visit local artisans, and where to find restorative breaks. Her primary differentiator is making guests feel instantly at home within a sensory-rich, often overwhelming megalopolis.

Acting as a stabilizing cultural anchor, she invites travelers to experience the city as welcomed friends rather than temporary spectators, seamlessly integrating authentic interactions with local tradesmen and neighborhood markets into her routes.

"Exploring Istanbul with Gülşen felt less like a traditional tour and more like walking through history with a brilliant, local friend. Her knowledge of Hagia Sophia and the Sultanahmet peninsula goes way beyond basic facts—she actually answered every hyper-specific question our family threw at her. Plus, she knew the exact quiet side-street cafés to hit when we needed a breather from the crowds."

"Finding a guide who is genuinely fluent in both Russian and English made a huge difference for our group, and Gülşen was absolute perfection. She effortlessly bridged the language gap while explaining complex Byzantine architecture and Ottoman history with real depth. You can immediately tell she has a formal degree in this—her insights are incredible."

"Gülşen completely elevated our trip. Instead of dragging us through a rushed checklist of monuments, she tailored the entire day around our pace, introduced us to local artisans near the Grand Bazaar, and made us feel so welcome in the city. By the end of our time in Istanbul, it honestly felt like saying goodbye to an old friend."

About us

We offer a unique, immersive travel experience across Turkey — not just Istanbul's lesser-known corners, but also the valleys of Cappadocia, the ruins of Ephesus, and the coastlines of Antalya and Bodrum, engaging guests in cultural activities like local home visits, market explorations, and Bosphorus cruises.

What we specialize in, above all, is matching each client with the right professional guide for wherever they're headed in Turkey — though if we're being honest, our roster is still concentrated mostly in Istanbul. As of August 2026, that roster stands at 54 professional tour guides, each one personally vetted rather than pulled from a directory. Most of what we arrange are daily and multi-day private tours, guided primarily in English, with guides available in other languages on request.

We also provide a full range of wheelchair-assisted guided tours, custom itineraries, and specialized tours covering historical, cultural, and niche interests like Jewish heritage, vegan spots, and bird-watching — now paired with a guide roster that reaches Ankara, the Black Sea, and the wider Mediterranean region. We also offer transportation services with professional guides for a more personalized and flexible experience.

Newsletter

The Other Tour is an immersive way to experience Istanbul and the rest of Turkey, led by licensed local guides who take you beyond the tourist spots into the lived culture and quiet corners of Cappadocia, Antalya, Ephesus, Bodrum, and the Mediterranean. We also build personalized travel planning, private tours, and custom itineraries — crafted around what you’re actually curious about, in any region of the country.
