Mustafa Gulek: Through the Lens, Dedicated to Humanity

Born in the historic neighborhood of Samatya in Istanbul, Mustafa Gülek is more than just a photographer—he is a storyteller, activist, and a champion for social change. His journey into photography began at the tender age of 17, and it became a lifelong passion that took him from the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan to the streets of Istanbul, capturing not just images but the essence of human resilience and hope.

Mustafa Gulek and Fethi Karatas

Early Life and Education

Mustafa Gülek’s academic journey began at Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ), where he studied economics during the politically tumultuous 1980s. After witnessing a military coup in Turkey shortly after graduation, he left the country and eventually pursued a doctorate in sociology in British Columbia, Canada, becoming a Canadian citizen. His education shaped not just his understanding of society but also his unique perspective on the power of photography as a tool for connection and advocacy.

A War Photographer with a Mission

Gülek’s career as a war photographer began during his five years in Iraq and four years in Afghanistan, where he worked with international organizations such as UNICEF. He also served as a war crimes photographer for the American Navy, documenting the unspeakable horrors of conflict. For Gülek, photography was never just about the image; it was about creating a bridge to understanding, empathy, and action.

Social Responsibility Through Photography

In 2011, as the Syrian civil war erupted, Gülek expanded his work to focus on refugees, launching social responsibility projects while documenting their plight. Collaborating with UNHCR, he volunteered in refugee camps worldwide, teaching photography to children and young adults, giving them a voice through the lens.

In 2015, Gülek shifted his focus to street photography and grassroots initiatives. He began organizing free photography workshops for children from underprivileged backgrounds, teaching them not just a skill but a way to express themselves and envision a brighter future. Over the years, he has empowered over 300 young people, some of whom turned photography into a profession.

Innovative Projects

Gülek’s innovative approach to teaching photography knows no bounds:

  • Blind Photographers: In Istanbul, he introduced blind individuals to photography using artificial intelligence and smartphone technology, proving that art transcends physical limitations.
  • Pandemic Outreach: During the COVID-19 lockdowns, he organized free online photography workshops for homebound individuals.
  • Post-Earthquake Initiatives: Following the devastating February 2023 earthquakes in southeastern Turkey, Gülek relocated to Hatay, teaching photography as a form of therapy for children and youth living amid the rubble. His work there also included securing university scholarships for affected students.

His words reflect his ethos:
“Photography is not an end; it’s a means to connect with people. My goal is to put family photos back on every living room wall.”

Recent Works and Exhibitions

In May 2024, Gülek returned to Turkey after decades abroad and soon after held an evocative exhibition titled “İstanbul’un Gölgesinde 2024“ (Under the Shadow of Istanbul 2024) in Karaköy. Featuring black-and-white photographs of Istanbul, the collection captured the city’s soul through the interplay of light, shadow, and human emotion. The exhibition, which concluded on November 6th, left a profound impact on art enthusiasts and critics alike.

Stay tuned for updates on his future exhibitions, which promise to be as moving and insightful as his previous work.

Hire Mustafa Gülek

While Gülek’s primary focus is social impact, his mastery in street photography is unparalleled. If you’re in Istanbul and want to explore the city’s hidden corners through his lens, you can hire him for a private photography experience. However, his expertise comes at a hefty price—a reflection of his decades of mastery and vision.
