The boat is old, timber, and permanently moored. It goes nowhere. Inside it is dark wood and low light; outside, a deck runs along the rail and every seat on it faces the water.
Every seat on the rail sits over the water, not beside it.
The far shore in front of you is the Asian side, close enough here that you can watch traffic move on it. Behind you is the Bebek promenade and everyone walking it, which is the other half of the entertainment.
Being on a hull instead of a terrace changes the evening. Everything shifts slightly, all night. After twenty minutes you stop noticing, and after that you cannot drink anywhere else on the strait without missing it.
What You Drink on Board
Nobody publishes the list and it changes, so treat what follows as the shape of it rather than tonight’s menu.
- Cocktails. The bar builds them: one arrives with a slice of dried orange and a whisper of rosemary, another smoky over one big cube. Ask the bartender what they are making tonight.
- Coffee, including Turkish coffee. The bar pours it all afternoon, so the boat works as a daytime stop too.

The Hour to Come
It opens in the middle of the afternoon and runs late. The hour that matters is the one before sunset, when the light comes down the strait from the north and turns the water and the yalı fronts on the far bank the colour everyone photographs Istanbul for.
Arrive an hour before that if you want a rail seat. After dark the boat becomes a quieter, warmer room and the crowd settles in for the evening.
The narrowest point of the whole Bosphorus is one bay north of Bebek, between Rumeli Hisarı and Kandilli, at roughly 700 metres. That is where they built the fortress to close the strait, and why the ship traffic you watch from the deck passes so close.
Bebek Around the Boat
Bebek is a bay on the European shore between the two bridges, and it is where Istanbul keeps its money. The waterfront is a single walkable stretch of coffee places, boutiques and moored boats, and Thomas sits on it.
You can fill an afternoon here without a plan. Walk the promenade from the mosque to the park, watch the rowers, and stop when you want a seat.

How to Get a Rail Seat
The boat is small, and there are not many seats on the rail. Everybody wants one.
- Ask ahead at a weekend. Walking on and finding a rail table free on a Saturday evening is a gamble you will usually lose.
- Say you want the rail. The staff will not seat you there unless you ask, and it is the reason to choose a boat over the cafés twenty metres away.
- Weekday afternoons are the quiet ones. Between opening and about five the deck is usually yours.
- Dress for moving air. It is open water, and the strait pushes a breeze even in August.
A guide calls ahead in Turkish and holds the rail before you have left the hotel; on your own, you find out at the gangway. Either way the walk in is part of it: stepping down onto a hull beats any door in this city.
Where It Fits in an Evening
A drink here is a chapter of an evening rather than the whole of it. Bebek is a long way up the European shore from the old city, so it works best folded into the rest of this coast.
