Footsteps of Midas: 6-Day Phrygian Anatolia Itinerary

A Journey Through the Phrygian Highlands

Central Anatolia harbors secrets far older than the famous Roman columns of the coast. For six days, we invite you to leave the well-trodden Mediterranean tourist path and vanish into the volcanic highlands of the Phrygians. This is a journey defined by striking rock-carved kingdoms and the healing thermal waters of Afyonkarahisar.

Table of Contents

The Forgotten Lords of Anatolia

Long before the Roman Empire laid its coastal roads, the Phrygians were the undisputed masters of the Anatolian steppe. Emerging in the Iron Age, this enigmatic civilization birthed some of humanity’s most enduring legends, from the immense wealth of King Midas to the fateful Gordion Knot.

Yet, while millions of tourists flock to the classical marble ruins of the Mediterranean, the Phrygian heartland remains a well-kept secret. Here, towering volcanic spires were hollowed out into multi-story castles, and massive geometric facades were carved into cliffsides to honor ancient gods.

To walk through Phrygia is to step into a landscape where ancient mythology and staggering engineering blur together in absolute silence.

The Journey at a Glance

Instead of racing from ruin to ruin, you will explore the Phrygian heartland through scenic, unhurried countryside drives. With relaxed mornings and thermal spa evenings built directly into the fabric of the trip, you can absorb the ancient world without an ounce of travel fatigue.

Day 1: The Capital's Treasury

Phrygian Artifects
Museum of Anatolian CIvilizations

Your journey into antiquity begins at Ankara Esenboğa Airport, where your private chauffeur awaits. Before venturing into the rugged highlands, context is essential. We spend our first afternoon walking the halls of the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations.

Housed within a stunning 15th-century structure, it holds the finest artifacts of the Phrygian kings. Here, you will study intricate bronze cauldrons and wooden furniture pulled directly from the earth.

Day 2: The Knot of Gordion & The Wooden Tomb

Gordion UNESCO Site
Midas Tumulus

Departing the capital after a leisurely breakfast, we drive westward across the Anatolian plains toward Gordion—the newly minted UNESCO capital of the Phrygians and the legendary site of the Gordion Knot.

Your guide will lead you down a long, stone corridor into the Great Tumulus to stand before the oldest standing wooden structure on earth: the tomb of King Midas’s father. Afterward, we continue to the vibrant, riverside city of Eskişehir to settle in for the night.

Day 3: Into the Volcanic Steppe

Porsuk River
Yazılıkaya

Enjoy a slow morning along Eskişehir’s Porsuk River before we transition into the striking, mountainous terrain of the Phrygian Highlands. This is a landscape of volcanic rock towers that rivals Cappadocia but remains blissfully untouched by mass tourism.

By afternoon, you will stand beneath the towering, 17-meter-tall Midas Monument (Yazılıkaya), a massive geometric facade carved directly into the cliff. As dusk approaches, we arrive in Afyonkarahisar, checking you into a premium thermal resort.

Day 4: Carved Castles & Sacred Lions

Rock-Carved Tombs
Avdalas Castle

Begin your day recovering in the mineral-rich thermal baths before we dive deeper into the Phrygian Valley. We explore Ayazini, a living village where modern homes sit seamlessly against ancient, rock-carved Phrygian tombs guarded by carved lions.

Later, we discover Avdalas Castle, a multi-story fortress completely hollowed out of a solitary rock peak. You will return to your hotel with ample time to enjoy the healing spa waters.

Day 5: The Lake of Emre

Lake of Emre
Phrygian Way

Our final day of exploration brings us to the utterly tranquil Emre Lake, nestled among dramatic volcanic cones. You will glide across the water on a traditional boat, taking in the ancient hermit caves and rock monuments lining the cliffs.

Following a rich Anatolian lunch, we walk a preserved stretch of the ancient Phrygian Way, stepping into the actual chariot ruts of ancient travelers, before returning for a final celebratory evening in Afyonkarahisar.

Day 6: A Mindful Departure

Turkish Breakfast
Airport Transfer

Forget the typical frantic packing and rushed airport runs. Your final morning is yours to enjoy a late breakfast and a final soak in the thermal pools.

Whenever you are ready, your driver will ensure a seamless, comfortable transfer to Zafer Airport for your onward journey.
