The Guides Who Make Turkey’s History Easy to Follow

Turning dense history into real stories

Byzantine liturgy, Ottoman court protocol, or ancient Roman plumbing rarely sound thrilling on paper. Put them in front of Ömer Çelik or Burak Plakay, and somehow they are. Bridging the gap between textbook facts and what it feels like standing right where history happened is the real job—and what every guide across Turkey has mastered.

Istanbul's Guides Turn History Into Conversation

Omer Celik

A guest who spent a day and a half with Ömer Çelik this summer put it simply: he was “very knowledgeable and informative about all the sights,” and — this is the part that matters — “so pleasant and funny it made the whole experience very enjoyable.“

He walked the group through Topkapi Palace, their favourite stop, threading court protocol and succession politics into a story they could follow between stalls at the Grand Bazaar. Burak Plakay works the same way on the other side of the city.

One couple who spent two days with him along the Golden Horn and the Asian side — mosques, churches, synagogues, tombs, markets, tea, coffee, a couple of afternoon drinks — described the conversation as “just the right mix of history, facts, stats and then just really good chat.“

Burak Plakay

That mix is deliberate. A guide who only recites dates loses the table by the second glass of tea; one who only tells stories loses the history.

Their knowledge of Istanbul’s incredible history was exceptional. They brought each era of the city’s past to life, explaining the significance of the Byzantine, Roman, and Ottoman periods in a way that was both engaging and easy to understand.

That review, from a guest who toured with both Burak Plakay and Ömer Çelik together, names the actual skill: not reciting three empires in order, but making each one legible on its own terms before moving to the next.

Ezgi Tilki & Deniz Karagözoğlu Widen the Story

Ezgi Tilki and Deniz Karagözoğlu round out the Istanbul team, working from the same brief as their colleagues: history is not a lecture, it is a conversation that happens to be extremely well informed.

Between the five of them, a guest can spend a week in Istanbul and hear the Byzantine, Ottoman and Republican layers of the city explained by a different voice each day, without getting the same version twice.

Betül Başak Digs Into the Story First

Betül Başak
Learn More

Betül Başak guides the way her own page title puts it: she got to a site’s archaeology before she got to the tourist version of it.

That order shows in front of a half-excavated foundation, where a guest wants to know what is original stone and what is reconstruction — she answers that question specifically, rather than gesturing at both and moving on.

Özgür Varol Brings Ephesus Into Focus

Özgür Varol
Learn More

In Ephesus, the temptation is to let the marble do the talking — the Library of Celsus photographs itself. Özgür Varol works against that, using the ruins as evidence for an argument rather than a backdrop for a photo: how a Roman port city organised its water, its trade and its politics into one working system, much of which still survives in the ground plan.

The result is a version of Ephesus a guest can actually explain to someone else afterwards, not just describe. That’s the real test of an accessible explanation of history — whether it survives being retold on the flight home.

Said Balcı Makes Cappadocia's Story Click

Said Balcı
Learn More

Cappadocia‘s history resists a quick summary — volcanic rock, Byzantine monks hiding entire churches underground, centuries of it layered into a landscape most guests have only seen in a hot-air-balloon photo.

Said Balcı starts with what a guest can touch: the soft rock itself, how it formed, why it was easy enough to carve a room into the mountain and hard enough to hold a fresco intact for a thousand years. The geology and the faith history turn out to be the same story, once someone explains it that way.

Fethi Karatas and Ozgur Varol in Ephesus - The Other Tour

None of this is a trick you can teach in an afternoon. It’s what happens when a guide has stood in the same spot enough times to know which fact lands and which one just fills air — and cares enough to keep choosing the first one.

That’s what our guests keep describing back to us, in their own words, whether the setting is Topkapi Palace, the Ephesus terraces, or a cave church in Cappadocia.

If you want that experience on your own trip, email us and mention the guide or the region that caught your interest — Ömer Çelik or Burak Plakay in Istanbul, Özgür Varol in Ephesus, Said Balcı in Cappadocia, or simply “whoever explains it best.” We’ll match you with the right person and build the day around the history you actually want explained.
