Side is a historical coastal town on the Mediterranean coast of Anatolia, set in the heart of ancient Pamphylia within what is today the Antalya region, famous for its ancient ruins, including a Roman theater, temples, and a well-preserved harbor.

Table of Contents

Introduction to Side Ancient City

Side is in Antalya Province, but it is not in the city of Antalya itself. It is a small resort town located about 75 km (47 miles) east of Antalya city center, near Manavgat.

This district offers travelers a unique opportunity to walk through history while enjoying the comforts of all-inclusive resorts, local cuisine, and easy accessibility. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a beach lover, or a curious traveler, Side promises a memorable and enriching experience.

Temple of Apollo

A Walk Through History

Side’s rich heritage is its heartbeat, with archaeological treasures that speak volumes about ancient civilizations. Founded by ancient Greeks and later flourishing under Roman rule, Side has a legacy interwoven with pivotal historical events and cultural exchanges.

Temple of Apollo

One of the most iconic ruins in Side, the Temple of Apollo dates back to the 4th century BC. Perched by the sea, its towering columns and intricate carvings once stood as a testament to the city’s prosperity and religious significance. Walking among these ruins, visitors can almost hear the echoes of ancient ceremonies and feel the spiritual aura that once permeated the area.

Ancient Theater

The theater is another jewel of Side, originally built during the Hellenistic period and later expanded by the Romans. What makes it especially remarkable is its construction technique: Unlike most ancient theaters in Anatolia, which borrow their strength from a natural hillside, Side’s theater only brushes against the slope.

Much of its seating was lifted on a sophisticated system of arches and vaults — a feat of Roman engineering that makes it one of the most distinctive theater structures in all of Anatolia. Its upper seating area was raised on a system of arches and vaults, making it one of the most distinctive Roman theater structures in Anatolia.

It served as a central venue for performances, gatherings, and public discourse, while its impressive acoustics and engineering still reveal the ambition of ancient Side.

Agora and Roman Baths

These ruins offer a glimpse into daily life centuries ago. The Agora was the heart of ancient commerce and community life, where traders and citizens mingled. Nearby Roman baths reveal the sophistication of Roman engineering and their emphasis on community, health, and social interaction.

City Walls and Other Ruins

Side was once fortified by robust walls that protected its inhabitants. Walking along sections of these walls, visitors can observe the strategic importance of the city and how its architecture evolved to withstand various sieges and influences over time.

These historical sites do more than just showcase stone and ruins; they narrate stories of Side’s evolution through Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods, providing valuable lessons on art, architecture, culture, and resilience.

Why Choose Side?

Side is more than a beach destination; it’s a living history book. Visitors choose Side for its:

  • Historical Richness: The abundance of well-preserved ruins offers a deep dive into ancient civilizations.
  • Balanced Appeal: A perfect mix of beach relaxation, cultural exploration, and modern luxury.
  • Educational Value: Opportunities to learn about ancient trade, architecture, religion, and everyday life through guided tours and museum visits.
  • Modern Comforts: High-quality all-inclusive resorts and hospitable services that make exploring historical sites enjoyable and comfortable.

These factors make Side a unique and appealing destination, setting it apart from other Mediterranean locales.

Sun, Sand, and Sea

Side’s coastline is renowned for its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. Beneath the sun, the golden sands invite you to relax, while the Mediterranean Sea provides a refreshing escape. While you enjoy the beach, you’re never far from glimpses of history—ruins peek out from the landscape, reminding you of the ancient civilizations that once thrived here. The blend of sun, sea, and history creates an unparalleled holiday experience that combines leisure with discovery.

All-Inclusive Resorts and Hospitality

Side is known for its range of all-inclusive resorts that cater to every need while offering easy access to historical sites. These resorts provide:

  • Comfortable Accommodations: Spacious rooms and modern amenities that ensure a relaxing stay.
  • Dining Options: A variety of restaurants serving both international and local Turkish cuisine, often with sea views and a historical ambiance.
  • Entertainment and Activities: Daily programs, spa facilities, and excursions that often include guided tours to ancient ruins, making it simple to incorporate educational experiences into your vacation.
  • Convenience: All-inclusive packages cover meals, drinks, and many activities, allowing you to focus on exploring and relaxing without worrying about logistics.

The hospitality in Side is warm and welcoming, further enhanced by the integration of historical themes in the guest experience, such as dining in settings overlooking ancient ruins or participating in cultural nights.

Local Culture, Cuisine, and Markets

The living culture of Side is deeply influenced by its ancient heritage, which is reflected in its cuisine, arts, and everyday life.

  • Culinary Heritage: Many traditional dishes have roots that trace back through centuries. Local eateries serve fresh seafood, hearty mezes, and sweets like baklava, often prepared using recipes passed down through generations.
  • Handicrafts and Markets: The bazaars of Side offer a range of handmade crafts, pottery, and jewelry that draw inspiration from ancient designs. Shopping here is more than a transaction—it’s an encounter with the artistic legacy of past civilizations.
  • Cultural Experiences: Regular cultural events, art exhibitions, and performances often highlight the historical background of Side, making it possible for visitors to engage with local traditions and crafts.

This immersion in local culture enriches your visit, providing a deeper understanding of how ancient history shapes contemporary life in Side.

Accessibility and Travel Insights

Side is easily accessible and well-equipped to accommodate visitors who are keen to explore its historical treasures.

  • Location: A short drive from Antalya International Airport, Side is conveniently located for both day trips and longer stays.

About us

We offer a unique, immersive travel experience across Turkey — not just Istanbul's lesser-known corners, but also the valleys of Cappadocia, the ruins of Ephesus, and the coastlines of Antalya and Bodrum, engaging guests in cultural activities like local home visits, market explorations, and Bosphorus cruises.

What we specialize in, above all, is matching each client with the right professional guide for wherever they're headed in Turkey — though if we're being honest, our roster is still concentrated mostly in Istanbul. As of August 2026, that roster stands at 54 professional tour guides, each one personally vetted rather than pulled from a directory. Most of what we arrange are daily and multi-day private tours, guided primarily in English, with guides available in other languages on request.

We also provide a full range of wheelchair-assisted guided tours, custom itineraries, and specialized tours covering historical, cultural, and niche interests like Jewish heritage, vegan spots, and bird-watching — now paired with a guide roster that reaches Ankara, the Black Sea, and the wider Mediterranean region. We also offer transportation services with professional guides for a more personalized and flexible experience.

Newsletter

The Other Tour is an immersive way to experience Istanbul and the rest of Turkey, led by licensed local guides who take you beyond the tourist spots into the lived culture and quiet corners of Cappadocia, Antalya, Ephesus, Bodrum, and the Mediterranean. We also build personalized travel planning, private tours, and custom itineraries — crafted around what you’re actually curious about, in any region of the country.
