Meet Orçun Kamit, the guide who knows Sultanahmet beyond its famous monuments. After guiding professionally since 2007, he brings Istanbul’s layered history into clear focus through thoughtful conversation, expert local knowledge and routes that adapt naturally to your interests.

Introduction to a Master Tour Guide

Licensed Istanbul tour guide Orçun Kamit posing in front of Hagia Sophia in Sultanahmet, Istanbul.

Orçun Kamit has worked as a licensed professional tour guide since 2007, but his relationship with Sultanahmet goes far beyond years of service.

He knows Istanbul’s historic centre street by street—from the monumental spaces around Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque to Byzantine palace remains, forgotten alleys, old commercial passages and trusted shops hidden behind the busiest tourist routes.

Fluent in English, disciplined by nature and endlessly curious, Orçun turns the Old City into a connected story rather than a checklist of famous sights.

A True Gentleman with A Gift with Words

Orçun never relies on rehearsed performances or exaggerated stories. He builds trust through experience, careful observation and an easy confidence that comes from spending nearly two decades guiding visitors through Sultanahmet and the historic heart of Istanbul.

Always wearing a warm smile, he explains emperors, sultans, merchants and master builders with remarkable clarity.

His tours unfold as conversations rather than lectures. He listens carefully, adapts the pace to each group and follows the questions that matter most. A walk may begin with Byzantine architecture, continue through Ottoman political history and finish inside a centuries-old workshop hidden beyond the crowds.

From Military School to Guiding

Orçun grew up in Muğla in southwestern Turkey. Before entering tourism, he followed a highly disciplined academic path, studying at Maltepe Military High School between 1989 and 1993 before continuing to the Turkish Land Forces Academy, where he earned a degree in Systems Engineering.

He entered professional tourism through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s guiding programme in Aydın and became a licensed tour guide in 2007. Since then, he has guided visitors in English while developing an exceptional command of Sultanahmet, where nearly every street preserves traces of the city’s Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman past.

His background gives him a rare combination of structure and adaptability. He can explain a complex political transformation with remarkable clarity, then happily leave the planned route when a guest spots an overlooked inscription, asks about a forgotten emperor or wants to understand how one surviving monument connects to the wider story of Constantinople.

Master Guide of Istanbul's Old Town

Orcun Kamit with Hagia Sophia Istanbul

Orçun has spent nearly two decades guiding almost exclusively through Sultanahmet and Istanbul’s historic peninsula. Rather than covering every region of Turkey, he chose to master one of the world’s richest historical landscapes, developing an exceptional understanding of its monuments, backstreets and hidden archaeological layers.

He presents the Old City as one continuous story, connecting places such as Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome of Constantinople and the Blue Mosque through the rise of the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire. His deep local knowledge also allows him to avoid crowds, adjust routes and reveal places that many visitors never discover.

His attention extends well beyond the landmarks. Orçun notices reused Roman stonework, overlooked Byzantine fragments, historic hans, quiet courtyards and streets that still follow the city’s ancient layout. Small details become the starting point for larger stories, helping guests understand how each generation reshaped Constantinople instead of simply replacing it.

Years of guiding have also given him exceptional practical knowledge. He knows when popular sites become crowded, how to adjust the route without losing historical continuity and where short detours reveal places that many visitors never notice. This flexibility makes every private Istanbul tour feel relaxed, efficient and tailored to the interests of each group.

Private Walking Tours

Every tour is tailored to your interests, but Orçun regularly introduces guests to the places that define Istanbul’s historic heart:

  1. Hagia Sophia: Discover the cathedral that became the spiritual and political heart of the Byzantine Empire, then continued its story under the Ottoman Empire.
  2. Blue Mosque: Learn how Sultan Ahmed I transformed Istanbul‘s skyline with one of the world’s most celebrated imperial mosques.
  3. Hippodrome of Constantinople: Walk through the political and sporting centre of the ancient capital, where emperors celebrated victories and thousands gathered for chariot races.
  4. Basilica Cistern: Step beneath the city to explore one of the greatest engineering achievements of Byzantine Constantinople.
  5. Grand Bazaar & Historic Hans: Explore traditional workshops, hidden courtyards and trusted artisans specialising in carpets, ceramics, jewellery, leather goods and textiles.

Every route remains flexible. Whether your interests lie in archaeology, architecture, photography, shopping or the history of Constantinople, Orçun shapes the day around what you want to experience most.

Discipline Beyond Guiding

Orçun‘s discipline extends well beyond guiding. He trains regularly in CrossFit and long-distance running, maintaining the stamina needed for full days on foot through Sultanahmet and the historic streets of Istanbul. He has completed races in Samarkand and the Istanbul Marathon, with his next challenge set for Bodrum on October 4, 2026. The consistency required for endurance sports mirrors the focus and preparation he brings to every tour.

His curiosity extends beyond history. Orçun Kamit is currently working toward the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) qualification, adding a modern technical discipline to his background in Systems Engineering. Although it may seem far removed from the worlds of the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire, it reflects the same instinct to understand how complex systems are built, connected and constantly evolving.

History Told Through Conversation

Orçun guides in fluent, natural English and adapts every conversation to the people walking beside him. Some guests enjoy discussing architecture, others want to understand the rise of the Byzantine Empire or the legacy of the Ottoman Empire, while others simply want to experience the atmosphere of Istanbul. He quickly understands what captures your interest and lets the day develop from there.

He explains complex history in a clear, approachable way without overwhelming visitors with too many dates or unnecessary detail. A well-chosen story, a sense of humour and the right historical context often leave a stronger impression than a long lecture.

By the end of the tour, the monuments no longer feel like isolated landmarks but chapters in a continuous human story.

Guests can imagine Emperor Heraclius returning triumphantly to Constantinople after his campaigns against the Persians in 629 AD, or the young Sinan being brought from the village of Ağırnas to the imperial capital, where he would eventually become the Ottoman Empire’s greatest architect and reshape Istanbul’s skyline.

They see how emperors, sultans, soldiers, architects, craftsmen, merchants and ordinary residents repeatedly inherited the same city, adapting its buildings and giving them new meanings. Instead of leaving with a collection of names and photographs, guests gain a clearer understanding of how Constantinople was built, conquered, transformed and gradually carried forward into modern Istanbul.

About us

About us

We offer a unique, immersive travel experience across Turkey — not just Istanbul's lesser-known corners, but also the valleys of Cappadocia, the ruins of Ephesus, and the coastlines of Antalya and Bodrum, engaging guests in cultural activities like local home visits, market explorations, and Bosphorus cruises.

What we specialize in, above all, is matching each client with the right professional guide for wherever they're headed in Turkey — though if we're being honest, our roster is still concentrated mostly in Istanbul. As of July 2026, that roster stands at fifty guides, each one personally vetted rather than pulled from a directory. Most of what we arrange are daily and multi-day private tours, guided primarily in English, with guides available in other languages on request.

We also provide a full range of wheelchair-assisted guided tours, custom itineraries, and specialized tours covering historical, cultural, and niche interests like Jewish heritage, vegan spots, and bird-watching — now paired with a guide roster that reaches Ankara, the Black Sea, and the wider Mediterranean region. We also offer transportation services with professional guides for a more personalized and flexible experience.

Newsletter

The Other Tour is an immersive way to experience Istanbul and the rest of Turkey, led by licensed local guides who take you beyond the tourist spots into the lived culture and quiet corners of Cappadocia, Antalya, Ephesus, Bodrum, and the Mediterranean. We also build personalized travel planning, private tours, and custom itineraries — crafted around what you’re actually curious about, in any region of the country.
