Istanbul Food Tour: Private Days of Real Turkish Food

An Istanbul food tour with The Other Tour is a private day of eating through the city with a licensed local guide: market stalls, street food and meyhane tables, routed around your tastes rather than a fixed menu.

Why Take a Food Tour in Istanbul

Istanbul does not keep its best food in restaurants with menus in four languages. It keeps it in the market stalls of Kadıköy, in meyhanes that never needed a sign, and in lokantas where the pots decide the menu. A guide who eats there walks you past the tourist tables and orders the things you would not know to ask for.

Our guides are licensed professionals, and they are also the people who argue about where the best döner in the city is. They know which counter to trust at the fish market, when the simit is still warm, and how to pace a day so you arrive at dinner hungry.

What a private food day includes:

  • Routing: the eating order planned around opening hours, ferry times and your energy.
  • Access: market counters, back-street lokantas and meyhane tables you would not find alone.
  • Translation: of menus, of dishes, and of the stories behind them.
  • Dietary needs: vegetarian, vegan and allergies handled before you sit down.

Istanbul is one of the great eating cities of the world. A day with a local who eats here is the shortest route to understanding why.

How a Private Food Day Works

Every food day starts with a short conversation about what you like to eat, and is then run by a licensed guide at your pace. A full day usually moves from a Turkish breakfast through a market, a proper lunch, something sweet, and ends at a meyhane or a fish restaurant. Half days carve out the morning or the evening. These are the routes guests ask for most:

None of these are fixed. Tell us what you eat and what you avoid, and the day is rebuilt around it.

Secret Flavors of Istanbul

A full-day private food tour through the markets and backstreets around the Spice Bazaar, eating the way the Old City has for centuries.

The Guide Who Runs Our Food Days

Binnur Eren Kurtoğlu spent ten years leading groups across Türkiye before she took her licence, and food tours are where she has focused for the past two years. In Kadıköy she takes guests into the market energy, away from the tourist atmosphere, tasting and walking and discovering the city through appetite and curiosity.

Some guides give you Istanbul as a timeline. Binnur gives you Istanbul as a feeling.

She is one of more than 54 licensed guides on the roster, and the right one for a food day depends on your pace, your language and your appetite. Meet the roster, or just tell us what you like to eat.

Where We Actually Eat

We publish honest write-ups of the places we take guests, and the places we go ourselves on a day off. Start with Galeyan in the old town, Gülhane Şark Sofrası below Topkapı, Metet for the city’s most talked-about döner, and Lokanta 1741 when the day calls for a Michelin-guided table. In Kadıköy, Basta! and the street food around the market.

Going deeper: breakfast in Istanbul, the historic restaurants, fish by the water, the Michelin stars, and what to drink beside it all: Turkish coffee, Turkish drinks and yogurt done properly.

Common Questions Before You Book

There is no single rate, and we do not publish one, because every food day is quoted after a short conversation about what you want from it. What decides the quote: the length of the day, how many of you there are, the language you need, whether a private vehicle is included, and what is on the table, from street food to a Michelin-guided dinner. Tell us your dates and your group and you will have a written quote, with everything it covers spelled out, usually within a day.

If you eat adventurously and research well, you will eat well in Istanbul on your own. What a private food day adds is order and access: the right neighbourhood at the right hour, dishes ordered in Turkish before you have to point at a menu, market counters no listing shows, and someone beside you to answer what am I eating, honestly.

Broadly yes. Turnover at the busy stalls is fast, most of the cooking happens in front of you, and the classics, simit, gözleme, balık ekmek, roasted chestnuts, are eaten daily by millions of locals. Use the usual judgement: busy stalls, cooked food, and bottled water if your stomach is delicate. On a guided day you simply eat where your guide eats; our street food guide shows what is on offer.

For the famous tables, yes: the Michelin-starred restaurants and the best-known meyhanes book out well ahead in high season. For the lokantas and market places where much of the best eating happens, you walk in. On a booked day we handle every reservation for you.

Yes. Turkish food is generous to vegetarians, a meze table alone can carry a dinner, and we run fully vegetarian and vegan days, from an organic market to the vegan spots we trust. Tell us about allergies and restrictions when you write, and every stop is chosen with them in mind.

Plan Your Istanbul Food Days

The Istanbul you have just read about, the market breakfasts, the meyhane at the end of the night, is the one we build food days around. It runs through everything else we do too: our private Istanbul tours eat this way even when food is not the theme, and the Secret Flavors walk is where to start if you only have one day.

Tell us when you are coming, how many you are and what you love to eat. We match you with a licensed guide who lives for this, handle every table, ticket and ferry, and reply within a day with a plan you can adjust freely. Read what 560 guests said on TripAdvisor or on our reviews page first.
