6-Day Lycian Coast Tour: Bodrum to Antalya

Turkey's Ancient Mediterranean Shore, Without the Crowds

Most 6-day Turkey tours trace the exact same arc, leaving the country’s most dramatic coast completely untouched. Beyond the crowded ruins of Ephesus lies Lycia—a rugged Mediterranean paradise of sea-cliff tombs, sunken Bronze Age shipwrecks, and empty trails. Skip the checklist. This is the ultimate road map to Turkey’s best-kept secret.

Table of Contents

The Independent Spirit of the Lycian Coast

Never a unified empire, Lycia was a fierce league of independent city-states carved into the rugged southwestern coast. Hemmed in by the towering Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean, these fiercely autonomous people successfully resisted early conquest. They forged an entirely distinct identity, complete with their own unique language, script, and democratic governing system that later drew praise from Roman historians.

What truly sets them apart is an architectural tradition unlike anything else in the ancient world. Instead of standard masonry, they carved magnificent, multi-story rock tombs directly into vertical cliff faces, meticulously mirroring the timber-framed houses of the living.

Threading directly through this dramatic terrain is the Lycian Way, a world-famous long-distance trail that connects these isolated marvels. Our curated itinerary mirrors the logic of this historic path—balancing dramatic coastlines, deep history, and quiet villages. Traveling by private vehicle ensures you skip the grueling treks while still giving the profound regional archaeology its proper weight.

Detailed Itinerary

6 Day Lycian Tour Map - The Other Tour

This carefully engineered route charts a continuous geographic and historical progression from west to east along the Mediterranean coast. Rather than rushing through standard transit corridors, the journey balances curated exploration of high-altitude acropolises, coastal ruins, and scenic trails. It is a cinematic drive that rewards curiosity, with every single day unpacking a distinct chapter of antiquity.

Day 1 — Bodrum: Crusader Castle & The Uluburun Shipwreck

Fly Istanbul → Bodrum (BJV)
Note: Guests would be staying overnight in Bodrum.

Arrive in Bodrum from Istanbul and transfer directly to the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology through private transportation, housed within the medieval Castle of St. Peter. Built by the Knights Hospitaller using stones from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, this spectacular fortress dominates the harbour bays and provides a dramatic setting for the treasures within. Plan for two to three hours to fully explore the vaulted halls and historic battlements.

The museum’s crown jewel is the Uluburun Shipwreck, a 3,300-year-old Bronze Age vessel that reveals a brilliant web of ancient globalisation. Its staggering cargo holds Cypriot copper, Egyptian ebony, Mesopotamian glass, and a rare gold scarab of Queen Nefertiti. While the deep wreck is inaccessible, the full-scale hull reconstruction offers an unparalleled look into antiquity. Afterward, dine on fresh Aegean seafood by the marina.

Day 2 — Tlos: Cliffside Tombs & The Valley

Bodrum → Fethiye Region · Approx. 3.5 Hours Driving
Note: Guests would be staying overnight in Fethiye or Oludeniz.

Leave Bodrum after breakfast and drive east along the scenic coast road toward Fethiye. The journey itself is beautiful, hugging the shoreline through pine-forested hills before descending into the broad delta of the Xanthos River. The afternoon is dedicated to Tlos, one of ancient Lycia’s most powerful city-states, dramatically crowning a massive limestone ridge that dominates the entire valley landscape below.

The ruins cascade down the hillside, blending a Lycian acropolis with a Roman theatre, a Byzantine basilica, and a thick field of sarcophagi. Its defining monument is the Tomb of Bellerophon, carved into the vertical rock face with a rare relief of the mythical hero riding Pegasus. Exploring Tlos orients you perfectly for the rest of the trip, showcasing the classic Lycian layout of high defensive forts and intricate cliffside necropolises.

Day 3 — Xanthos & Patara: Capital Ruins & Deserted Beach

Fethiye Region → Xanthos Valley → Patara
Note: Guests would be staying overnight in Patara or Kalkan.

Xanthos, the UNESCO-listed capital of the Lycian League, carries one of antiquity’s most haunting legacies. Twice in its history—when besieged by the Persians and later by the Romans—its citizens chose collective suicide, burning their own city to the ground rather than surrendering. Today, its monumental ruins stand open to the sky, featuring a grand Hellenistic theatre, the famous Harpy Tomb, and sprawling, intricate late-antique Byzantine floor mosaics.

Just fifteen minutes away lies Patara, Lycia’s premier naval port and the birthplace of St. Nicholas. Once home to a legendary oracle of Apollo, its monumental parliament building and triumphal arches are now dramatically swallowed by shifting coastal dunes. Directly behind these ancient monuments stretches a spectacular, untouched beach protected for nesting sea turtles, creating a striking landscape where deep history meets an empty Mediterranean shore.

Day 4 — Kayaköy & Ölüdeniz: Ghost Village & The Ridge Trail

Kalkan → Kayaköy → Ölüdeniz
Note: Guests would be staying overnight in Fethiye or Göcek.

Today you explore on foot, tracing one of the most scenic stretches of the Lycian Way. The trek begins in Kayaköy, a haunting ghost town of 500 roofless stone houses abandoned during the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Left completely untouched by modern development, this silent Greek Orthodox settlement slowly returns to the hillside, offering a powerful, melancholy window into the bureaucratic shifts of the early 20th century.

From the village, a pine-scented ridge path leads you on an easy 3-hour hike, unveiling breathtaking, elevated panoramas of Ölüdeniz and its iconic Blue Lagoon. Arriving from the wilderness on foot offers a pristine perspective that standard tour buses completely miss. For a spectacular finale, you can optionally glide over the turquoise lagoon via a tandem paragliding launch from the towering heights of Mount Babadağ.

Day 5 — Limyra & Chimera: Forgotten Ruins & Eternal Flames

Fethiye → Limyra → Olympos/Chimera → Antalya · Approx. 4 Hours Driving
Note: Guests would be staying overnight in Antalya.

Drive east into the heart of ancient Lycia’s eastern territory to Limyra, an undervisited major site whose historical significance far outpaces its tourist traffic. Its defining feature is the Heroon of Pericles, a unique dynastic temple-tomb blending Lycian rock-cut traditions with early Greek funerary architecture. The cliffs are dense with tomb chambers, and a 26-arch Roman bridge crosses the Limyros River below.

Continue east to the Chimera, a hillside where natural methane seeps have burned continuously since antiquity. Believed to be a mythical monster’s breath and used as a lighthouse by ancient sailors, these flickering blue flames are best seen after dark amid the ruins of a Byzantine church. The uphill walk takes about twenty minutes from the parking area before you make the final drive to Antalya.

Day 6 — Antalya: Roman Harbors & The Old City

Antalya → Istanbul (AYT)
Departure: Transfer to Antalya Airport (AYT) for your flight back to Istanbul.

Spend the morning in Antalya’s Kaleiçi, a walled Roman harbor district with a remarkably intact ancient street grid, Hadrian’s Gate, and Ottoman-era mansions. Be sure to visit the Antalya Archaeological Museum, which holds superb sculptural material from the Lycian sites you have just visited, including the world-renowned Perge Gallery of Roman statuary.

Optional extension: Sagalassos, located about 1.5 hours north of Antalya. This high-altitude ancient city features the best-preserved Roman imperial fountain complex in Anatolia and is perfectly feasible as a morning excursion if your flight is in the late afternoon.
