Kayalıpınar Royal Archive: Latest Hittite Discovery in Sivas 2026

The 3,400-Year-Old Hittite Archive Resurfacing in Sivas

Deep in the heart of Central Anatolia, recent archaeological excavations at Kayalıpınar—identified as the ancient Hittite city of Samuha in Sivas—have unearthed an extraordinary royal archive of cuneiform tablets. Dating back 3,400 years, these remarkable texts reveal desperate military dispatches, court medicine, and royal divinations.

A Groundbreaking Hittite Discovery

For years, the windswept mound of Kayalıpınar, tucked away in the Yıldızeli district of Sivas, kept quiet guard over its secrets. But recent excavations have broken that silence, unearthing over 180 cuneiform tablets and fragments—the largest cache of Hittite texts discovered this century.

Carved into clay in both Hittite and Hurrian, these 3,400-year-old records pull back the curtain on the chaotic reign of King Tudhaliya II. They reveal that ancient Samuha was never just a sleepy frontier outpost.

Instead, as smoke rose over the besieged capital of Hattusa, the royal court relocated here, transforming this city on the bend of the Kızılırmak River into an imperial lifeline where kings, generals, and scribes fought desperately to keep their empire alive.

Urgent Dispatches from the Imperial Frontier

History often remembers ancient empires through towering monuments and boastful triumphal inscriptions. But the tablets emerging from Samuha tell a very different, deeply human story—one marked by sweat, exhaustion, and battlefield dread.

Among the finds is direct correspondence sent from the frontlines of Western Anatolia, where Hittite commanders found themselves cut off, under-resourced, and holding on by a thread.

In frantic clay letters addressed directly to the king, field generals make desperate pleas for backup:

“Send more foot soldiers, send fresh horses, send battle chariots before it is too late. There is no bravado here.”

In some of the most chilling lines in the archive, commanders plainly warn the court that their men face total annihilation—even going so far as to put in writing that if the defensive lines collapse, the blood will not be on their hands.

Royal Medicine and Ancient Pandemics

Beyond the clash of bronze swords, the archive opens a heavy wooden door into the quiet, vulnerable corners of the palace itself. For the Hittites, illness was never just biological—it was an omen, a tangible sign of divine displeasure that could threaten an entire lineage.

One of the most poignant texts in the entire collection reads like a heartbreaking medical diary. A lethal fever swept through the royal quarters, eventually seizing the king’s infant nursing daughter.

Scribes documented the baby girl’s worsening condition day after agonizing day, capturing the helpless interventions of court healers and her eventual death. Following her loss, the tablet details the solemn, meticulous funerary rituals performed by the court, racing to lay her spirit to rest and spiritually cleanse a grief-stricken household.

The Field Journals of the Bird Diviners

Before an army marched or a treaty was signed, the Hittites looked to the sky for answers. Among the rarest discoveries at Kayalıpınar are the working travel journals of the LUMUŠEN—the empire’s professional augurs, or bird diviners.

Unlike the rigid, theoretical omen lists kept locked inside temples, these tablets read like travel diaries from the road. The diviners saddled up, left the city gates of Samuha, and fanned out across the Anatolian plains.

Along their journeys, they logged every village they crossed and every wild bird they encountered—watching the angle of a raven’s turn, the height of an eagle’s climb, or the sudden flutter of a finch. Their scribbled field notes directly shaped whether an imperial army advanced into battle or stayed safely behind city walls.

Imperial Seals and Administrative Power

Imperial Seals

Buried alongside the tablets were dozens of stamped clay bullae—small lumps of clay pressed with signet rings to seal official documents, storage jars, and royal orders.

They bear the marks of princes, princesses, senior scribes, and high-ranking military officers, including sealings of King Tudhaliya IV and the high priest Kantuzzili.

Each impression represents a living, breathing bureaucrat working along the banks of the Kızılırmak River, stamping their mark to keep the wheels of an embattled empire turning.
