Anatolia guards some of the most profound secrets of human history, hiding everything from lost Bronze Age monarchs to massive empires. Over seven days, this journey bypasses the usual crowded tourist circuits to dive exclusively into the majestic archaeological sites of Istanbul, Ankara, and Çorum.

Table of Contents

Introduction to Anatolian Archaeological Journey

Too many historical tours in Turkey trap travelers in an exhausting, jam-packed schedule, turning some of the world’s most important ruins into hurried photo opportunities. We took an entirely different approach.

By spending a full week across just three historically intertwined regions, you are given the space to truly digest Anatolia’s complex archaeological narrative.

Stand before the earliest known peace treaty in Istanbul, track its roots back to the sweeping Hittite capital of Hattusa, and step inside the Phrygian tomb of King Midas.

Blending seamless travel logistics with the curatorial insight of The Other Tour, this route provides an enriching, restorative dive into the ancient world without the burnout.

Detailed Itinerary

We purposely built this trip to value depth over distance. Limiting our daily explorations to just one or two significant archaeological sites means you have genuine time to examine the artifacts, linger over leisurely lunches in historic neighborhoods, and wander through massive museum collections without ever hitting museum fatigue.

Day 1: Uncovering Roman Arenas and Sunken Cisterns

Basilica Cistern
Hippodrome
🏛️ Main Attractions: Hippodrome of Constantinople & Basilica Cistern 🌙 Overnight Options: Istanbul (Pera Palace Hotel / Ajwa Hotel Sultanahmet)

A private chauffeur will welcome you at Istanbul Airport and drive you straight to your elegant accommodation. We kick off the afternoon with a leisurely stroll tracing the ancient Roman footprints of the city. You’ll walk the exact grounds of the Hippodrome, taking in the towering obelisks that once overlooked massive chariot races.

Next, we head underground to the Basilica Cistern, an eerie, beautifully restored Byzantine water reservoir. Wander along the raised pathways to find the repurposed Medusa stones hiding in the dim light. Your first evening is completely free for a relaxed, Bosphorus-view dinner.

Day 2: Imperial Sarcophagi and Ancient Accords

Istanbul Archaeological Museum
Tiled Kiosk
🏺 Main Attractions: Istanbul Archaeological Museums & Tiled Kiosk 🌙 Overnight Options: Istanbul (Pera Palace Hotel / Ajwa Hotel Sultanahmet)

After a sprawling Turkish breakfast, we block out the entire morning for the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, tucked away in Topkapı Palace’s outer courtyards. This vast complex houses some of the globe’s most vital antiquities.

You will stand face-to-face with the legendary Alexander Sarcophagus and examine the Kadesh Treaty, history’s oldest surviving peace accord.

Since there is no rush to catch a bus, take your time enjoying coffee in the shaded museum courtyard. Later, wander through the stunning Tiled Kiosk to admire incredible historic ceramics before enjoying a free evening to dine in the old town.

Day 3: Leaving the Coast: A Flight to the Anatolian Capital

Ankara Citadel
✈️ Main Attractions: Quick Domestic Flight & Ankara Citadel 🌙 Overnight Options: Ankara (Lugal, a Luxury Collection Hotel / Sheraton Ankara Hotel)

Today, we leave the breezy coast for the vast steppes of Central Anatolia. Following a slow morning, your driver will take you to the airport for a short, effortless domestic flight to Ankara. Flying instead of driving saves you hours, meaning you land energized for the afternoon.

A local driver will be waiting at Esenboğa Airport to bring you to your downtown hotel. After grabbing a regional lunch, we climb up to the Ankara Citadel.

As you walk through its ancient walls, you’ll spot a fascinating mix of Roman, Byzantine, and Seljuk masonry, ending the day with a sweeping sunset view of the capital.

Day 4: The Dawn of Human Civilization

Museum of Anatolian Civilizations
Temple of Augustus
🗿 Main Attractions: Museum of Anatolian Civilizations & Temple of Augustus 🌙 Overnight Options: Ankara (Lugal, a Luxury Collection Hotel / Sheraton Ankara Hotel)

This day is dedicated to the absolute pinnacle of Turkey’s ancient history: the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. Set inside a beautifully repurposed 15th-century marketplace, this collection covers tens of thousands of years of human existence.

You’ll get up close to the famed Mother Goddess of Çatalhöyük and study the massive stone reliefs left behind by the Hittite kings.

After a quiet lunch, we shift to the Roman era, exploring the ruins of ancient Ancyra. Walk through the sprawling Roman Baths and see the enduring legacy of Rome’s first emperor etched into the Temple of Augustus. Enjoy a free evening to dine in Ankara’s lively Kavaklıdere neighborhood.

Day 5: The Phrygian Capital and the Journey East

Gordion UNESCO Site
Midas Tumulus
👑 Main Attractions: Gordion UNESCO Site & The Midas Tumulus 🌙 Overnight Options: Çorum (Hattuşa Vacation Thermal Club / Başaranlar Hotel)

We leave the city behind this morning to visit the newly minted UNESCO site of Gordion. This was the beating heart of the Phrygian kingdom and the legendary home of King Midas. The absolute highlight is walking through the long tunnel into the Great Tumulus to witness the oldest standing wooden tomb on earth.

After a quick lunch, we hit the road for a scenic drive further east toward Çorum—the very core of the ancient Hittite world. The drive across the Anatolian plateau is peaceful and striking. Check into your local boutique stay and enjoy a quiet, traditional dinner to fuel up for tomorrow.

Day 6: Hattusa: The Great Hittite Empire Capital

Hattusa Ancient City
Yazılıkaya Sanctuary
🦁 Main Attractions: Hattusa Ancient City & Yazılıkaya Sanctuary 🌙 Overnight Options: Çorum (Hattuşa Vacation Thermal Club / Başaranlar Hotel)

Today is entirely devoted to Hattusa, the awe-inspiring Bronze Age capital of the Hittite superpower. Exploring this massive, mountainous UNESCO site is truly unforgettable. You’ll walk through the imposing Lion Gate, admire the craftsmanship of the Sphinx Gate, and hike along ancient defensive walls that once guarded a vast empire.

Following a hearty lunch in Boğazkale, we head to the nearby open-air shrine of Yazılıkaya. Carved directly into the natural rock faces, you will find incredibly detailed reliefs of Hittite gods and goddesses marching in formation. We’ll head back to the hotel by late afternoon so you can rest and reflect.

Day 7: The Royal Tombs of Alacahöyük and Departure

Alacahöyük
Sphinx Gate
🏺 Main Attractions: Alacahöyük Royal Tombs & Sphinx Gate ✈️ Departure: Smooth Transfer to Ankara Esenboğa Airport

We wrap up our historical expedition at Alacahöyük, a crucial site that actually predates the Hittites. Best known for its striking Sphinx Gate and deeply fascinating Bronze Age royal graves, it serves as the perfect final puzzle piece of your Anatolian journey.

You can wander through the quiet ruins in the crisp morning air, taking in the ancient stonework without the crowds.

We’ll sit down for one last authentic Anatolian lunch nearby. Afterward, your driver will load up your bags and safely navigate the relaxing drive directly back to Ankara Esenboğa Airport for your journey home.
