The Phrygian Way: Footsteps Across Anatolia’s Highlands

Walking Through the Forgotten Heart of Phrygia

Across the wind-swept plateaus of Central Anatolia, ancient cart tracks carve deep grooves into grey volcanic tuff. Pine-scented mountain air sweeps through deserted canyons where monumental stone facades stand sentinel over golden fields. Here, time slows to the gentle rhythm of footsteps whispering forgotten legends on a quiet trail.

A Corridor Through Antiquity

Across 506 kilometers of wind-sculpted plateau, the trail traces the faint heartbeat of an Iron Age kingdom carved straight into grey volcanic tuff.

Spanning the quiet hinterlands of Ankara, Afyonkarahisar, Kütahya, and Eskişehir, this is not merely a path between scattered ruins, but an unhurried drift into the ancient undercurrents of the Anatolian highlands.

Here, the ground carries the mythic weight of King Midas and the sacred sanctuaries of Matar, the great Mother Goddess Cybele.

Pressing your palms against cool, chiselled basalt or following deep chariot ruts worn into open rock, the centuries collapse—leaving only the raw craft of forgotten stonemasons and the silence of an enduring mountain realm.

Milestones on the Trail

Traveling the Phrygian Way means wandering through open steppe, volcanic canyons, and forested heights where rock and human devotion blend into a living archive of Anatolian earth.

1. Gordion: The Citadel of the Knotted Crown

Gordion Ancient City

Where the Sangarius River cuts through vast rolling steppes, Gordion rises as the legendary royal seat of ancient Phrygia. Walking across the citadel mound, trekkers trace the monumental stone gates where Alexander the Great famously severed the Gordian knot, forever tying his destiny to Asia’s crown amidst these weathered ruins.

Beyond the central citadel, the dramatic landscape is punctuated by over a hundred ancient burial tumuli rising against the open sky. Deep within the Great Tumulus lies the timber burial chamber of a royal patriarch, a testament to early engineering surrounded by bronze cauldrons and sacred feasting relics from a distant epoch.

2. Kütahya: Where the Wild Steppe Yields

Kutahya Highlands

Ascending westward into the Kütahya Highlands, the open steppe gives way to dense pine forests and jagged volcanic crags. This wild frontier offers cool mountain shade and deep solitude, where remote paths guide wanderers past hidden rock-cut chambers and ancient road ruts worn smoothly into stone by iron-rimmed chariot wheels.

Traversing high pastures and quiet highland hamlets, the trail reveals a timeless rural rhythm unchanged for centuries. Weathered stone bridges and secluded Byzantine chapels emerge from lush valleys, offering an enchanting wilderness escape far removed from modern development and defined by the quiet hospitality of the mountains.

3. Yazılıkaya: The Sacred City of Cybele

Yazılıkaya

At the sacred crossroads of the trail lies Yazılıkaya, the spiritual epicenter of the Phrygian realm known as Midas City. Towering seventeen meters above the plateau floor, the magnificent Midas Monument features intricate geometric carvings that once framed solemn rituals to Matar, echoing ancient devotions to the Mother Goddess.

Exploring the high rock citadel unveils stepped altars, monumental cisterns, and sacrificial niches carved directly into plunging cliffs. Standing before the unfinished facade, travelers glimpse the precise techniques of ancient stonemasons, catching echoes of rhythmic drumming and flute music drifting across the peaceful valley.

4. Ayazini & Köhnüş: The Valley of Guarded Tombs

Ayazini

Winding southward toward Ayazini, the landscape erupts into a surreal topography of carved tuff spires and pale fairy chimneys. Here, history and daily life merge as modern village homes sit nestled directly alongside ancient rock-cut tombs and multi-story cave dwellings hewn into soft volcanic cliffs over countless generations.

In the nearby Köhnüş Valley, sacred silence envelopes the grand necropolis of Aslantaş, where giant rearing lions guard royal tombs. Nearby, the cavernous fortress of Avdalaz Castle offers sweeping views across golden fields littered with ancient stone chambers and serene landscapes that capture Anatolia‘s raw, unyielding beauty.

Planning Your Journey

Trekking the Phrygian Way requires an unhurried pace to fully absorb the region’s quiet majesty and rich archaeological layers.

Spring and Autumn offer ideal hiking weather, painting the highlands with blooming wildflowers or crisp golden light, well away from the scorching mid-day summer sun that bakes the exposed volcanic rock.

Restful evenings are spent in charming highland guesthouses and boutique village lodgings, savoring hearty regional cuisine and hot tea.

Immersing in local thermal baths after a demanding day on the trail revives weary limbs, grounding the historic journey in authentic Anatolian hospitality, rural calm, and deep physical renewal.
