Selim Ozyurek - Cappadocia english-speaking tour guide

Introduction to Selim Özyürek

Selim is not just a licensed Cappadocia tour guide — he’s a local son of the land, raised among its fairy chimneys, pigeon valleys, and whispering cave dwellings. His childhood footsteps echo through the same volcanic landscapes that travelers dream of visiting today. That deep-rooted connection to the region makes every one of his tours feel personal, vibrant, and real.

Having studied tourism at Mersin University and lived for several years in Germany, Selim blends professionalism with cultural fluency. He’s someone who can seamlessly translate Cappadocia’s ancient history into engaging stories, while also chatting effortlessly over coffee about anything from Turkish traditions to international cuisine. His time abroad has only strengthened his gift for connection — guests from all over the world instantly feel at ease with him.

A Visual Storyteller in the Valleys of Time

What makes Selim truly stand out as a Cappadocia private guide is how he uses both his knowledge and creativity to make the region come alive. On each tour, he brings a large tablet packed with visuals he’s created himself: ancient maps, diagrams of the region’s geology, animated explanations of Christian iconography, and archival images of life in the valleys decades ago.

With Selim, you don’t just hear about the formation of fairy chimneys — you see it unfold. You don’t just peek into a cave church — you understand its art, its symbolism, its sacred echoes. His visual storytelling adds a whole new layer to the journey, making the experience more engaging, more memorable, and frankly, more fun.

Hiking Through History

If your idea of adventure includes lacing up your hiking shoes and wandering off the beaten path, Selim’s your guy. He’s passionate about leading valley hikes in Cappadocia — slow, mindful explorations that combine breathtaking views, historical ruins, and the quiet of nature.

One of his favorite things is guiding guests through lesser-known valleys, where time seems to pause. Think wild apricot trees, hidden rock-cut chapels, forgotten cave homes, and sun-drenched ridges with no one else around. Along the way, Selim shares stories and invites guests to sit, reflect, and soak in the spirit of the land.

He’s known for extending hikes beyond their planned route, simply because a path looks inviting or the group is enjoying the moment. With Selim, there’s no rush — only the joy of discovery.

A Taste of Culture, a Dash of Curiosity

Selim is also deeply in love with the cultural and culinary treasures of Cappadocia. Whether it’s introducing guests to local dishes like testi kebab or mantı, explaining the meaning behind village traditions, or pointing out the purpose of a blue evil-eye charm hanging in a doorway, he makes Turkish culture feel tangible and heartfelt.

His tours often include spontaneous tea breaks with locals, impromptu chats in village squares, or shared meals that feel like family gatherings. He has an uncanny ability to make guests feel less like tourists and more like traveling companions in a shared story.

And then there are the cats.

Selim always carries a small bag of cat food in his backpack — a quiet ritual he shares with guests who wish to participate. Whether you’re pausing by a stone wall in a sleepy village or sitting outside a cave church, if a cat wanders by, Selim will greet it with kindness. It’s a small gesture that adds warmth to the journey, and one many guests remember long after they’ve gone.

From Kayseri to Cappadocia: A Warm Welcome

For travelers arriving through Kayseri Erkilet Airport, Selim often offers a mini-intro tour of Kayseri, his hometown. It’s a charming bonus — a chance to see the medieval castle, browse bustling local markets, or enjoy a slice of Turkish life before venturing into the fairy-tale terrain of Cappadocia.

This optional stop isn’t a tourist gimmick — it’s a heartfelt invitation to understand the broader cultural fabric of the region. Selim believes the more context travelers have, the more deeply they connect to Cappadocia once they arrive.

Why We Love Working with Selim

At The Other Tour, we believe travel should be personal, immersive, and filled with genuine human connection. That’s exactly what Selim brings to the table.

His guests often describe their time with him as the highlight of their trip. Many stay in touch with him long after they’ve left, trading stories, updates, and memories. That’s because Selim doesn’t just guide — he connects. People to places. Cultures to stories. Curiosity to understanding.

About us

We offer a unique, immersive travel experience across Turkey — not just Istanbul's lesser-known corners, but also the valleys of Cappadocia, the ruins of Ephesus, and the coastlines of Antalya and Bodrum, engaging guests in cultural activities like local home visits, market explorations, and Bosphorus cruises.

What we specialize in, above all, is matching each client with the right professional guide for wherever they're headed in Turkey — though if we're being honest, our roster is still concentrated mostly in Istanbul. As of July 2026, that roster stands at fifty guides, each one personally vetted rather than pulled from a directory. Most of what we arrange are daily and multi-day private tours, guided primarily in English, with guides available in other languages on request.

We also provide a full range of wheelchair-assisted guided tours, custom itineraries, and specialized tours covering historical, cultural, and niche interests like Jewish heritage, vegan spots, and bird-watching — now paired with a guide roster that reaches Ankara, the Black Sea, and the wider Mediterranean region. We also offer transportation services with professional guides for a more personalized and flexible experience.

Newsletter

The Other Tour is an immersive way to experience Istanbul and the rest of Turkey, led by licensed local guides who take you beyond the tourist spots into the lived culture and quiet corners of Cappadocia, Antalya, Ephesus, Bodrum, and the Mediterranean. We also build personalized travel planning, private tours, and custom itineraries — crafted around what you’re actually curious about, in any region of the country.
