There’s a city on Türkiye‘s west coast that defies all expectations one might have of a city in a Muslim-majority country: Izmir, with its proudly secular spirit, progressive mindset, lively café culture, and Mediterranean ease, offers a refreshing contrast where Atatürk’s legacy is not only remembered but actively lived.

Table of Contents

What Makes İzmir a Must-Visit in Turkey?

Nestled on Turkey’s western Aegean coastline, Izmir is a vibrant fusion of ancient history and modern charm. As Turkey’s third-largest city and a prime travel destination, İzmir offers something for every type of traveler—whether you’re a history enthusiast exploring ancient ruins, a beach lover craving turquoise waters, or a culture-seeker ready to dive into local life.

If you’re planning a trip to Turkey and want a destination that combines cultural heritage with seaside relaxation, İzmir should be at the top of your list.

Walking Through Time: The Ancient Cities of İzmir

Long before İzmir became a modern metropolis, it was known as Smyrna, one of the most prominent cities in the ancient world. Today, İzmir is surrounded by some of the richest archaeological sites in Turkey, making it a dream destination for lovers of history and mythology.

Agora of Smyrna

Located in the heart of İzmir’s modern city center, the Agora of Smyrna dates back to the Roman period. This ancient marketplace once served as the city’s commercial and political hub. Strolling through its arches, colonnades, and inscribed stones is like stepping back 2,000 years in time. Entry is easy from Konak, and guided archaeological tours are available year-round.

Ephesus: One of the World’s Greatest Ruins

Just an hour south of İzmir lies Ephesus, one of the best-preserved classical cities in the Mediterranean. Once a bustling Roman metropolis, Ephesus is home to architectural marvels like the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre (seating 25,000), and the remnants of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The House of the Virgin Mary

Located near Ephesus on Mount Koressos, the House of the Virgin Mary is believed to be where Mary, mother of Jesus, spent her final years. Today, it’s a place of pilgrimage and prayer for visitors of all faiths. The peaceful setting offers a moving contrast to the grand ruins below.

St. John's Basilica

The Basilica of St. John stands as a powerful testament to the fusion of faith, empire, and architectural ambition in the Byzantine world. Commissioned by Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century, it was built to honor the Apostle John—believed to be buried beneath its foundations—making it not only a place of worship but a monumental declaration of Christianity’s ascendancy within the Eastern Roman Empire.

Justinian’s great legacy in Istanbul: Hagia Sophia from the 6th century

What makes the basilica truly remarkable is its scale and symbolism. Designed in the form of a cross and crowned with six massive domes, it reflected both spiritual devotion and imperial might. At its height, it rivaled the great churches of Constantinople, signifying the spread of Christian influence across the Mediterranean. Its construction over an earlier 4th-century chapel also reveals the site’s continuous sanctity through centuries of religious transformation.

Though now in ruins, the basilica’s surviving marble columns, mosaics, and carved capitals still convey its grandeur and the engineering prowess of Byzantine builders. More than an archaeological site, it remains a bridge between eras—a sacred space that captures the evolution of belief, art, and empire in the ancient world.

Pergamon (Bergama)

Another jewel in İzmir’s archaeological crown is Pergamon, known for its magnificent hilltop acropolis, Asklepion healing center, and dramatic amphitheater carved into the mountainside. Pergamon is also recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and makes for a fascinating day trip.
