Arykanda: The Lost Lycian City in the Mountains

Least Visited Lycian City in the World

Beyond the crowded shores of Turkey’s Lycian coast lies a breathtaking secret hidden high in the mountains. Perched among pine forests and dramatic cliffs, the mountain city of Arykanda offers ancient history without the tourist crowds. Here is your guide to exploring “Turkey’s Delphi” in complete, uninterrupted tranquility.

Table of Contents

Introduction to Arykanda

Most travellers race along Turkey’s Mediterranean coast chasing the famous names: Myra and its rock tombs, Patara and its endless beach, the sunken city of Kekova. Almost nobody turns inland and climbs into the mountains.

That is exactly why you should. Roughly 25 km from the sea, perched on a series of stone terraces between 700 and 820 metres above sea level, sits Arykanda — one of the most beautiful and least-visited ancient cities in all of Lycia.

It has been called “Turkey’s Delphi” and when you stand in its theatre with cliffs rising at your back and a forested valley falling away in front of you, the comparison makes sense. Here is everything you need to know to visit, plus a few films to set the scene before you go.

A quick history

Arykanda’s name gives away its age. The ending -anda belongs to the ancient, pre-Greek Anatolian Luwian language once spoken across this region, and the name itself is often translated as “the place beside the high rock” — a fittingly literal description for a city built against a cliff.

That linguistic root belongs to the wider story of Anatolia, and hints at Bronze Age origins, though the visible remains tell a later story. Archaeologists who have worked the site across nearly fifty seasons of excavation see little that looks truly urban before the 3rd century BC.

By then Arykanda was a member of the Lycian League, the remarkable federation of cities that stretched from around modern Antalya to Fethiye.

It was never a political heavyweight within that league, but it was clearly wealthy. The city flourished for roughly half a millennium, spanning the last two centuries BC and the first three AD, reaching its peak under the Roman Empire.

Quite where the money came from is still something of a mystery: the narrow valley was no agricultural powerhouse, so the wealth may have flowed from trade along the north–south mountain route Arykanda guarded, or from the timber of its forests — the tall cypresses prized by ancient shipbuilders for masts.

The city survived well into the Byzantine Empire era, acquiring churches and a bishopric before eventually fading. That obscurity is precisely its charm. As one long-time visitor put it, Arykanda is “a rare gem, not spoiled by the tourists.“

What to See

Roman Theatre
The Stadium
Roman Baths

The theatre: The undisputed star. Carved into the hillside with steep cliffs behind it, this finely preserved Greek-style theatre once seated more than 3,000 people — likely more than the city’s own population, which tells you something about its regional pull. The auditorium, the circular orchestra and the foundations of the stage building all survive.

The stadium: Just above the theatre lies a small but beautifully preserved Hellenistic stadium, probably from the 3rd century BC. At a little over 100 metres it is short by ancient standards — the terrain dictated as much — but its hillside seating is among the best preserved anywhere.

The Roman baths: At the eastern edge of the city stands a monumental bath-and-gymnasium complex, the largest in Lycia, with some walls still standing to the height of their vaults. Its sheer scale is yet another clue to the city’s surprising wealth.

Monumental Tombs
Roman Floor Mosaics

The monumental tombs. The necropolis behind the baths is extraordinary: temple-style tombs standing beside sarcophagi and great barrel-vaulted chambers. Most date to the Roman period and Greek architectural fashion rather than the older native Lycian style — a deliberate statement of status by the families who built them.

The mosaics and the views: Look out for late Roman floor mosaics, including one with bird motifs, and simply pause to take in the panorama across the valley. The setting, more than any single monument, is what stays with you.

How to get there

Our Recommendation
Private Van Hire

Private van hire with driver in Turkey using Mercedes Vito or Caravelle. Comfortable, flexible travel for transfers and city tours.

LEARN MORE

By car is by far the easiest option. From Antalya city centre it is about 140 km — roughly a two-hour drive. Take the coastal D400 west towards Finike, then turn inland onto the Elmalı road and follow the brown signs for Arykanda; the site lies about 15 km north of Finike. The final approach is a small side road, but it is well marked.

By public transport, frequent buses run from Antalya to Finike (around two hours). From Finike you can pick up a local dolmuş (shared minibus) heading toward Elmalı and ask to be let off at Arykanda, or hire a taxi for the short hop up to the site. A car or organised tour is more comfortable, since the ruins are a little removed from the main road.

Why Arykanda belongs on your itinerary

There are grander, more famous ruins in Turkey — Ephesus will always draw the crowds. But Arykanda offers something the blockbuster sites cannot: the feeling of discovery. You climb into the mountains, you turn off the main road, and suddenly a whole city unfolds beneath the cliffs, almost entirely to yourself.

It is beautiful, mysterious and quiet in a way that lingers long after you leave. This is exactly the kind of place we love to share — the other Turkey, away from the tour-bus trail. Watch the films above, then come and walk these terraces for yourself.
