Introduction to our 11-Day Western Turkey Tour

An 11-day private journey from Istanbul that connects the ancient kingdoms and sacred landscapes of western Turkey. From the mosques and bazaars of Istanbul to the thermal waters of Pamukkale, the marbles of Aphrodisias and the legendary city of Troy, this itinerary is designed as a comfortable, fully escorted road trip with your own driver–guide and handpicked hotels.

This is a private tour – we run it just for you, at your own pace, with plenty of flexibility for photo stops, coffee breaks and extra visits along the way.

Day-by-Day Bullet Summary

Day 1 – Arrival in Istanbul

  • Meet your private driver at the airport.

  • Transfer to your hotel in the Old City or Beyoğlu.

  • Free time to rest, adjust and explore the neighborhood at your own pace.

  • Overnight in Istanbul.

Day 2 – Classic Istanbul: Sultanahmet

  • Full-day private tour of the historic peninsula.

  • Visit Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace (optional Harem), Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome.

  • Explore either the Grand Bazaar or Spice Market, depending on your interests.

  • Stroll through old backstreets and pause in a quiet tea garden.

  • Optional sunset Bosphorus cruise in the evening.

  • Overnight in Istanbul.

Day 3 – Istanbul • Cumalıkızık Village • Bursa

  • Depart Istanbul towards the Sea of Marmara region.

  • Visit Cumalıkızık, a preserved Ottoman village with cobbled lanes and timber houses.

  • Enjoy village-style tastings or lunch.

  • Continue to Bursa: Ulu (Grand) Mosque, Silk Market, old bazaars, Green Mosque & Mausoleum.

  • Check into a thermal or boutique hotel.

  • Overnight in Bursa.

Day 4 – Bursa • Aizanoi • Kütahya • Afyon

  • Leave the coast and head into inner Anatolia.

  • Explore Aizanoi: Temple of Zeus, theater and stadium side by side.

  • Short stop in Kütahya, known for its tiles and ceramics; optional workshop visit.

  • Arrive in Afyon, famous for thermal springs and traditional architecture.

  • Check into a comfortable thermal hotel.

  • Overnight in Afyon.

Day 5 – Afyon • Yazılıkaya (Midas City) • Pamukkale

  • Drive through Phrygian countryside to Yazılıkaya (Midas City).

  • See rock-cut façades, ancient inscriptions and cult sites of the Mother Goddess Cybele.

  • Continue to Pamukkale with its white travertine terraces.

  • Depending on arrival time, first walk around the terraces or relax at the spa hotel.

  • Overnight in Pamukkale.

Day 6 – Pamukkale & Hierapolis • Aphrodisias • Kuşadası

  • Morning visit of Hierapolis: necropolis, ancient streets, Roman theater and (time permitting) the museum.

  • Free time to walk barefoot on parts of the travertines.

  • Drive south to Aphrodisias, a stunning, lesser-known archaeological site.

  • Explore the Temple of Aphrodite, huge stadium, theater and marble-filled agora.

  • Continue via the Meander Valley to the Aegean coast and Kuşadası.

  • Overnight in Kuşadası.

Day 7 – Ephesus, Virgin Mary & Şirince

  • Visit the House of the Virgin Mary on Mount Koressos.

  • Explore Ephesus: Library of Celsus, Marble Street, Temple of Hadrian, Great Theater and more.

  • Head to Şirince village for hillside views, local wines and traditional houses.

  • Visit the Basilica of St. John and viewpoint towards the former Temple of Artemis site.

  • Return to Kuşadası.

  • Overnight in Kuşadası.

Day 8 – Kuşadası • Pergamon • Assos

  • Travel north along the Aegean coastline.

  • Stop at Pergamon: dramatic hilltop acropolis with steep theater and ruined temples.

  • (Optional) Visit the Asclepion, the ancient healing sanctuary, if timing allows.

  • Continue to Assos (Behramkale), overlooking the island of Lesvos.

  • Walk the old streets and optionally visit the hilltop Temple of Athena.

  • Check into a stone-built, characterful hotel near the harbor or village.

  • Overnight in Assos.

Day 9 – Assos • Troy • Return to Istanbul

  • Drive to Troy, with its many settlement layers and Homeric legends.

  • Guided visit of the archaeological site.

  • Cross the Dardanelles by ferry towards the Thracian side.

  • Optional short visit to Gallipoli for one or two key memorials (if added).

  • Continue to Istanbul, arriving in the evening.

  • Overnight in Istanbul.

Day 10 – Istanbul at Leisure

  • Free day to follow your own rhythm in Istanbul.

  • Explore neighborhoods like Karaköy, Balat or Kadıköy with your guide, or wander solo.

  • Time for shopping, a Turkish bath, extra museums or laid-back café-hopping.

  • Flexible use of your driver–guide within the city.

  • Overnight in Istanbul.

Day 11 – Departure

  • Private transfer from your hotel to Istanbul Airport.

  • If your flight is later, you can add last visits or a final Bosphorus cruise.

  • End of services.

Detailed Day-to-Day Itinerary

An 11-day private road trip that connects the great civilizations of western Turkey: Byzantine and Ottoman Istanbul, the first Ottoman capital of Bursa, the Roman sanctuaries of Aizanoi and Aphrodisias, the Phrygian highlands of Midas, and the Aegean icons of Ephesus, Pergamon, Assos and Troy.

Day 1 – Arrival in Istanbul

Meet your private driver at the airport and transfer to your hotel in the old city or Beyoğlu area, the modern center of contemporary Istanbul, depending on your preference. Free time to rest, adjust and start exploring the neighborhood at your own pace.

Overnight in Istanbul

Day 2 – Classic Istanbul: Sultanahmet

Full-day private walking & driving tour around Istanbul’s historic peninsula:

  • Hagia Sophia: the 6th-century masterpiece of Emperor Justinian

  • Topkapı Palace (with optional Harem section) – residence of Ottoman sultans

  • Blue Mosque and the ancient Hippodrome square

  • Grand Bazaar or Spice Market, depending on your interests

  • Backstreets of the old city and a stop in a quiet tea garden

You’ll have time for relaxed breaks, photos and a proper lunch.

(Optional: add a sunset Bosphorus cruise this evening.)

Overnight in Istanbul

Day 3 – Istanbul • Cumalıkızık Village • Bursa

Depart Istanbul in the morning and drive across the Sea of Marmara region to Cumalıkızık, a well-preserved Ottoman village with cobbled lanes and timber-and-stone houses. Stroll through the village and enjoy a village-style lunch or tasting stop.

Continue to Bursa, the first capital of the Ottoman Empire:

  • Ulu (Grand) Mosque

  • Silk Market and old bazaar streets

  • Green Mosque and Mausoleum

Check into a thermal or boutique hotel – ideal for an evening soak after a day of sightseeing.

Overnight in Bursa

Day 4 – Bursa • Aizanoi • Kütahya • Afyon

Aizanoi

Today you leave the coast behind and head into the interior of Anatolia.

  • Visit Aizanoi, one of the best-preserved Roman temple complexes in Asia Minor, with its impressive Temple of Zeus, theater and stadium sitting back-to-back.

  • Continue to Kütahya, famous for its handmade tiles and ceramics. Short walk in the old quarter and time to see local workshops if you wish.

Arrive in Afyon in the late afternoon, known for its thermal springs and traditional architecture.
Check into a comfortable thermal hotel.

Overnight in Afyon

Day 5 – Afyon • Yazılıkaya (Midas City) • Pamukkale

Drive through the Phrygian countryside to Yazılıkaya, sometimes called the “City of Midas”. Here you’ll see rock-cut façades, ancient inscriptions and cult sites dedicated to the Mother Goddess Cybele.

Continue to Pamukkale, where mineral-rich waters have created the famous white travertine terraces. Depending on arrival time, you can enjoy a first walk around the terraces or relax at your spa hotel.

Overnight in Pamukkale

Day 6 – Pamukkale & Hierapolis • Aphrodisias • Kuşadası

Morning visit of Hierapolis, the ancient spa city above the terraces:

  • Necropolis and ancient streets

  • Roman theater

  • Archaeology museum (time permitting)

  • Free time to walk barefoot along sections of the travertines

Then drive south to Aphrodisias, one of Turkey’s most beautiful and lesser-known archaeological sites. Visit Karahayıt or explore the Temple of Aphrodite, the massive stadium, theater and marble-filled agora.

By late afternoon continue through the Meander Valley to the Aegean coast and the resort town of Kuşadası.

Day 7 – Ephesus, Virgin Mary & Şirince

  • House of the Virgin Mary on Mount Koressos

  • Ancient city of Ephesus: Library of Celsus, Marble Street, Temple of Hadrian, Great Theater and more

  • Village of Şirince, known for its hillside houses and local wines

  • Basilica of St John and a viewpoint towards the former site of the Temple of Artemis

Return to Kuşadası in the late afternoon.

Overnight in Kuşadası

Day 8 – Kuşadası • Pergamon • Assos

Head north along the Aegean coast.

Stop at Pergamon, the dramatic hilltop city once home to a great library and healing center:

  • Acropolis of Pergamon with its steep theater and ruined temples

  • Asclepion, the ancient medical sanctuary 

Continue along the coast to Assos (Behramkale), a stone-built village overlooking the island of Lesvos. Walk around the old streets and visit the hilltop Temple of Athena if you like.

Check into a characterful stone hotel near the ancient harbor or village.

Overnight in Assos

Day 9 – Assos • Troy • Return to Istanbul

Drive to the legendary city of Troy, with its multiple layers of settlement and stories that inspired Homer’s Iliad. After your guided visit, cross the Dardanelles by ferry and continue back towards Istanbul.

If you wish, you can add a short stop on the Gallipoli peninsula to visit one or two key memorials (extra driving time, but possible on a private basis).

Arrive in Istanbul in the evening.

Overnight in Istanbul

Day 10 – Istanbul at Leisure

A free day in Istanbul to follow your own rhythm:

  • Explore neighborhoods like Karaköy, Balat or Kadıköy with your guide
    or

  • Enjoy shopping, hammam, museums or a relaxed café day on your own

Your driver–guide is available for flexible touring within the city.

Day 11 – Departure

Private transfer from your hotel to Istanbul Airport.

If your flight is later in the day, we can add a few last visits or a Bosphorus cruise before you we drive you to the airport.
