Lycia is one of Türkiye’s most captivating ancient regions, where mountains meet the sea and history lies quietly in the landscape. This private journey introduces you to a world of rock-cut tombs, forgotten cities, and coastal ruins, guided by an expert who brings its stories to life beyond the surface.

Discover Lycia: Myths & Empires Meet

Lycia is one of the Mediterranean’s most remarkable yet lesser-known civilizations, where dramatic landscapes and ancient history are inseparably linked. Carved into cliffs, hidden in valleys, and scattered along turquoise shores, its cities tell stories of independence, trade, and cultural exchange. This journey is not simply about visiting ruins, but about understanding how geography, mythology, and daily life shaped a unique and sophisticated world.

Led by Deniz Karagözoğlu, this private experience offers rare access to the deeper layers of Lycia. With decades of fieldwork and storytelling, he transforms each site into a living narrative, connecting stones to people, and history to the present. Moving at your own pace, you explore both iconic landmarks and remote sites, gaining insight that goes far beyond guidebooks or standard tours.

Detailed Itinerary

Over four days, the journey traces the heart of ancient Lycia, beginning from Antalya and moving west through mountain passes and coastal plains. You explore sites such as Limyra and Arykanda, before continuing to Myra, Kyaneai, and the quiet shores of Üçağız. The experience blends inland ruins with coastal discoveries, including a private boat trip over the sunken city of Kekova. On the final day, you visit Xanthos, Letoon, and Patara, uncovering the political, religious, and cultural centers of the Lycian world, all at a flexible and comfortable pace.

Day 1: From Antalya to Finike: Entering the Lycian World

Your journey begins in Antalya, where you meet your guide and set off toward the western Taurus foothills. As the city fades behind you, the landscape opens into forested slopes and winding mountain roads, offering a clear sense of the terrain that shaped ancient Lycia. Along the way, your guide introduces the region’s history, its independent city-states, and its strategic role between inland Anatolia and the Mediterranean. Your first stop is Limyra, an important Lycian city known for its early bridges, tombs, and political significance, providing a quiet but powerful introduction to the civilization you are about to explore.

From Limyra, the route climbs higher into the mountains, leading to Arykanda, one of Lycia’s most dramatic archaeological sites. Built into a steep hillside, the city unfolds in terraces, revealing theatres, baths, and public spaces that reflect a life adapted to challenging terrain. As you walk through the ruins, the panoramic views connect history with landscape, making the experience deeply immersive.

Day 2: Myra, Saint Nicholas & the Hidden City of Kyaneai

The second day begins with a drive to Demre, the site of ancient Myra, one of Lycia’s most important cities. Here, you explore its iconic rock-cut tombs carved into the cliffs and the well-preserved Roman theatre below, both reflecting the city’s wealth and influence. You then visit the Church of Saint Nicholas, linked to the historical figure behind Santa Claus, and the Lycian Civilizations Museum, where artifacts and exhibits provide deeper context to the region’s culture and history.

In the afternoon, the journey turns quieter and more remote as you follow country roads toward Kyaneai, a lesser-known archaeological site set among hills and open landscapes. Walking through its scattered ruins, surrounded by silence and nature, offers a completely different perspective from the more visited locations. The day ends in Üçağız, a small seaside village by Kekova Bay, where you enjoy a relaxed evening and settle in for the night by the water.

Day 3: Kekova Coast: Sunken Cities & Coastal Life

The third day shifts toward the Lycian coastline, where history and landscape merge seamlessly. You begin at Apollonia, a quiet inland site surrounded by nature, before setting out on a scenic walk along a section of the Lycian Way. The trail leads toward Aperlai, an ancient city once known for its purple dye trade, where ruins lie scattered between hills and sea. This stretch offers a slower, more immersive experience, connecting archaeology with the natural beauty of the region.

Later, you board a private boat to explore the waters of Kekova, gliding over the remains of a sunken city visible beneath the surface. Stops include Simena, a small hilltop village crowned by a medieval castle, offering panoramic views across the bay. The day continues with time to swim, relax, or explore quiet coves, before ending at Theimussa Nekropolis, where Lycian sarcophagi line the shore. You return to Üçağız for another peaceful evening by the sea.

Overnight in Antalya

Day 4: Patara, Xanthos & Letoon: Lycian Heartland

On the final day, you head inland along the Eşen River valley, famously called the “swirling Xanthos” in Homer’s Iliad. Your first stop is Xanthos, the political center of the Lycian League, where monumental tombs and inscriptions tell the story of a sophisticated ancient democracy. Nearby Letoon, the sacred sanctuary of Lycia, offers serene ruins set among cypress groves and olive trees, once hosting important religious festivals and rituals.

The tour concludes at Patara, a city of immense Roman grandeur and the birthplace of Saint Nicholas. Here, you explore its ancient parliament building, theater, and expansive streets, imagining the Lycian League in action. After soaking in the history, travelers have the option of a convenient drop-off at Antalya Airport, wrapping up a private, immersive journey through the mountains, valleys, and coastlines of ancient Lycia.
