Four Seasons Hotel Sultanahmet – Istanbul’s Old Town

The Prison That Became Istanbul's Best-Placed Address

A cell block in 1919. A five-star suite by 2022. The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet spent fifty years as a working jail before it became one of the most requested addresses in Istanbul, and it now sits three minutes on foot from Hagia Sophia and five from the Blue Mosque, close enough to reach either in whatever you slept in.

Few hotels in Sultanahmet carry a stranger past, and none wear it with quite this much polish.

Table of Contents

A Prison Reborn in Marble

Istanbul‘s first purpose-built prison opened on this exact plot in 1919 under the name Dersaadet Cinayet Tevkifhanesi, built in the heavy stone, formally symmetrical style of the era’s First National Architecture movement. For the next fifty years it operated as Sultanahmet Prison, and its cells held some of the century’s sharpest dissident pens rather than common criminals.

Aerial view of Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet's yellow ochre building with Hagia Sophia's dome and minarets rising directly above the roofline

The poet Nazım Hikmet wrote much of his epic Human Landscapes from My Country (Memleketimden İnsan Manzaraları) inside these walls. The novelist Orhan Kemal drafted Ward 72 here, Kemal Tahir wrote Esir Şehrin Mahpusu, and Yalçın Küçük composed Aydın Üzerine Tezler — four major works of Turkish literature, all written from the same cell block.

Nazım Hikmet (Turkish poet) spent years inside these walls writing about ordinary Turkish lives, in a place where he could not live an ordinary one himself

The prison closed in 1969 and stood empty until Four Seasons took on the building in 1994, spending two years turning cell blocks into corridors and the old exercise yard into a courtyard garden thick with roses and begonias, and opening the hotel in 1996.

A former watchtower still stands over that same courtyard, repainted and softened, far more likely today to shade a breakfast table than a guard.

A second renovation, completed in November 2022, redid every room, every public space, and added a new spa.

Guests who learn the building’s history before they arrive tend to find it adds weight to the stay rather than unease.

Nothing about the current polish — the marble, the courtyard flowers, the quiet — hints at what the address used to be, and the hotel treats the story as heritage instead of something to hide.

Steps From Hagia Sophia & Blue Mosque

Sultanahmet is Istanbul‘s original tourist gauntlet, all cobbled streets, tour groups, and souvenir stalls, and this hotel sits in the calm eye of it.

Hagia Sophia is a three-minute walk from the front door. The Blue Mosque is five. Topkapi Palace is close enough to reach before the first tour buses arrive, and the upper floors catch views toward the Sea of Marmara and, on a clear day, the Princes’ Islands beyond it.

Few Istanbul hotels can put both landmarks this close without also putting you in the middle of the crowds heading toward them.

Staying inside Sultanahmet turns the two sights everyone flies to Istanbul for into a five-minute errand rather than a taxi booking, which leaves room to see each one twice: once with the crowd, and once at the early hour a private guide can get you inside before the doors open to the public, walking straight past the side-chapel mosaics and marble doorframes most tour groups never slow down for.

That gap, between the version everyone photographs and the version almost nobody sees, is the whole reason The Other Tour exists.

  • Hagia Sophia: a 3-minute walk from the hotel.
  • Blue Mosque: a 5-minute walk from the hotel.
  • Topkapi Palace: a short walk, easiest before mid-morning crowds arrive.
  • Also nearby: the Grand Bazaar, Basilica Cistern & Hippodrome — all an easy walk across the historic peninsula.

Staying this close is only half of it; the other half is walking in at the quiet hour, past the side-chapel mosaics most tour groups never slow down for. Tell us your dates and we’ll build a private Sultanahmet day around your hotel and your pace.

Rooms Built Around Quiet Detail

Four Seasons kept this property boutique on purpose: 65 rooms and suites in total, a fraction of what a comparable five-star tower would hold, which means the staff tend to know your name by the second morning rather than the fourth.

Rooms start around 450 square feet, generous by old-city standards, with tall windows opening onto the courtyard, the Istanbul skyline, or, in the best rooms, Hagia Sophia‘s dome itself.

One-bedroom suites on the first through third floors split living and sleeping space and look down over the courtyard’s begonias and that same converted watchtower.

The Marmara Suites go further: nearly 1,400 square feet across three private terraces facing the Sea of Marmara and the Princes’ Islands, the kind of room where breakfast on the terrace becomes the actual reason you booked it.

Every room has an espresso machine, a marble bathroom with a deep soaking tub, Diptyque bath products, and a hooded ikat robe over a traditional Turkish peshtemal. The minibar stocks pistachio-studded milk chocolate, and the artwork on the walls mixes contemporary pieces with framed Ottoman-era calligraphy panels.

Anatolian Plates & Terrace Cocktails

Avlu Restaurant serves modern Anatolian cooking either in a glass-enclosed courtyard or out on the open terrace, depending on the season and how much open sky you want overhead. Lingo Lingo Restaurant & Lounge takes the later, louder half of the evening.

For something smaller, La Pistache sets out Turkish and international dessert bites in the lobby, timed for the gap between sightseeing and dinner reservations.

The Terrace Bar keeps a short menu of Turkish bites and signature cocktails running into the night, close enough to the Blue Mosque‘s evening call to prayer that you can hear it over the ice in your glass.

Guides who spend their days walking Sultanahmet know which window table catches that call clearest and which hour empties the terrace of everyone else, the kind of detail a concierge rarely volunteers unless you ask the right question.

A Hammam in the Old Yard

Kurna Spa runs the full traditional circuit: a warm bath, a full-body scrub, and a foam massage that turns the hammam ritual into ceremony rather than a spa menu item.

Deep Tissue and Back & Shoulder massages cover anyone who has spent the day on Sultanahmet‘s stone streets and can feel it in their shoulders by evening, and a sauna rounds out the wing.

It is also why our guides pace a private day through the old city with a slower back half instead of the nonstop pace of a bus tour, leaving exactly this kind of evening free rather than rushing you to a ninth stop you will not remember.

Who This Hotel Really Suits

This is a hotel for travelers who came to Istanbul for the history and want to sleep inside it: couples on a first trip to Turkey, families who would rather walk to the Blue Mosque than sit in traffic to reach it, and anyone who hears “former prison” and leans in rather than backs away.

It is not the cheapest bed in Sultanahmet, and it never aimed to be. What it sells instead is location that removes an entire category of trip friction: no taxis, no metro transfers, no half-hour buffer built into every plan, plus a level of quiet a 65-room property can offer that a 300-room tower generally cannot. For a first or once-a-decade trip to Istanbul, that trade tends to be worth it.

Travelers chasing nightlife or a lower nightly rate might do better a short ride away, in Beyoğlu or Karaköy.

What Guests Say

This is a beautiful old building with a lovely roof top and courtyard. Great staff hospitality and diverse breakfast options. There is no pool or spa but you can travel to the other property for that if you want it. The location is great for exploring town and for a short visit

My family and I had a wonderful experience at Four Seasons Sultanahmet. They went above and beyond for our kids! The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The beds were extremely comfortable. As far as the location is concerned, it’s absolutely perfect for exploring the old city. We plan to come back for our next visit to Istanbul.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Four Seasons Sultanahmet have a swimming pool?

No, there is no pool on-site; the building's protected prison-era footprint left no room for one. Guests get complimentary access, plus a free shuttle, to the outdoor pool at the sister property, Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus, about a 15-minute drive north. If a pool matters to your trip, factor in that short transfer before you book.

Is the Four Seasons Sultanahmet good for families with children?

Yes. The 65-room scale keeps it calm rather than cavernous, babysitting can be arranged on request, and the walk-everywhere location means no car seats or traffic between the Blue Mosque and lunch. Families who would rather stroll to Topkapi Palace than negotiate a taxi with tired kids tend to get the most from staying inside Sultanahmet.

Do the rooms have a view, or do they still feel like prison cells?

It varies by room, and it's worth choosing carefully. Because the walls were never moved, many rooms look onto the interior courtyard rather than the city, while the upper floors and the Marmara Suites open toward Hagia Sophia's dome and the Sea of Marmara. The thick original stone walls are the trade-off's upside: the rooms are unusually quiet. If a view is a priority, ask for an upper floor or a Marmara Suite by name. The Other Tour arranges your reservations to your needs and desires.

Is there a Turkish hammam or spa at the hotel?

Yes, Kurna Spa runs the full traditional hammam circuit of a warm bath, a full-body scrub, and a foam massage, alongside deep-tissue and back-and-shoulder treatments and a sauna. Some suites also have private marble-lined steam rooms a few steps from the bed. It's a genuine ritual rather than a token spa menu, and a welcome end to a day on Sultanahmet's stone streets.

How far is the hotel from Istanbul Airport, and can it arrange a transfer?

Istanbul Airport (IST) is roughly 40 kilometres away, about a 45-minute drive in light traffic, longer at peak hours. The hotel does not run its own airport shuttle, but when you book through us we handle your transport; you can book a dedicated airport transfer or private van with driver in advance so someone is waiting at arrivals rather than negotiating a taxi rank after a long flight.

Which restaurants are inside the Four Seasons Sultanahmet?

Four, each for a different hour. Avlu serves modern Anatolian cooking in the courtyard and earned a place in the Michelin Guide in 2024; Lingo Lingo is the later lounge; La Pistache sets out dessert bites in the lobby; and The Terrace Bar runs cocktails and Turkish plates into the night, close enough to hear the Blue Mosque's evening call to prayer.

Can a guide get me into Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque before the crowds?

Yes, and it is one of the biggest reasons to pair the hotel with a private guide rather than going it alone. A licensed guide knows the earliest entry windows, the prayer-time closures at the Blue Mosque, and which doorway avoids the main queue — so the three-minute walk from your room lands you at Hagia Sophia's mosaics before the tour buses arrive, not behind them.

When is the best time of year to stay in Sultanahmet?

April to May and September to October give the mildest weather and thinner crowds on the historic peninsula. July and August are hot and busy, which makes the hotel's quiet courtyard and short walking distances more valuable, not less. Winter is the quietest and often the best value, with the added upside that Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar feel almost local once the tour groups thin out.

Does the former-prison history make the hotel feel eerie to stay in?

Almost never, in guests' own accounts. The marble, the rose-and-begonia courtyard, and the softened old watchtower give no hint of the cell blocks, and the hotel treats the past as heritage rather than something to hide. Most travellers who read the story beforehand find it adds weight to the stay — you are sleeping where Nazım Hikmet once wrote — rather than unease.

Is the Four Seasons the only good place to stay in Sultanahmet?

No, it is the best-placed five-star, but the neighbourhood has strong smaller options at lower rates, such as the Ottoman-mansion Darussaade Hotel or the Ajwa Hotel Sultanahmet. Travellers chasing nightlife or a lower nightly rate often base themselves a short ride away in Beyoğlu or Karaköy instead. We take no commission on any hotel, so we'll tell you honestly which fits your trip.

How do I plan a private Istanbul trip around a stay here?

Email us your dates and where you're staying, and we'll shape a private Sultanahmet tour and any wider Istanbul days around your hotel and pace. The Other Tour has operated since 2011 under TÜRSAB licence #7651, takes no commissions on hotels, shops, or restaurants, and donates €50 of every booking to Istanbul public schools, so the recommendations are ours alone, and the next step is a conversation, never a booking button.

Stay Close See More with The Other Tour

Wake up under artwork that has outlived a few centuries, walk out into Sultanahmet before the tour buses arrive, and be back at Hagia Sophia‘s steps in the time it takes to lace your shoes. That is the entire case for the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet, prison walls and all.

Tolga Bensan - Blue Mosque - The Other Tour

The Other Tour has been building private Istanbul days since 2011, under TÜRSAB license #7651, with no commissions taken on hotels, shops, or restaurants. This recommendation, like every other one on this site, is ours alone.

Tell us your dates and where you are staying, and we will shape a private Sultanahmet tour around your hotel, your pace, and the hours before the crowds show up.
