History of the imperial capital

Istanbul has a remarkably long and rich history spanning approximately 8500 years. But in the last 2 millennia the city has been one of the most significant in all of history, serving as the capital of empires that have left their indelible mark on the city’s architectural landscape and cultural legacy. To fully appreciate the unique blend of influences, let’s take a condensed journey through some of the key empires and periods to prepare you for your Istanbul travel 2025.

Early Settlements

Archaeological discoveries reveal Istanbul‘s history extends far earlier than previously believed. Neolithic settlements found near Yenikapi date back to 6700 BC, while the Fikirtepe mound indicates Copper Age presence (5500-3500 BC). A Phoenician port in Kadıköy further diversifies the picture. These finds suggest that Istanbul’s early inhabitants lived in small communities, practiced agriculture, fishing, and toolmaking, likely benefiting from the city’s strategic location for trade and cultural exchange.

Greek Foundation

Founded by Megarian Greeks around 667 BC on a defensible peninsula with the strategic Golden Horn harbor, Byzantium was built with the classic elements of a Greek city – an acropolis, temples, and likely an agora. The city expanded, possibly competing with neighbors like Chalcedon, and became a wealthy trading hub exchanging Black Sea resources (grain, fish, timber, slaves) for Mediterranean luxuries. Byzantium faced complex relations with Thracian tribes, experienced Persian dominance in the 6th and 5th centuries BC, and became entangled in the power struggles between Athens and Sparta during the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC). Despite its commercial focus, a distinct Greek identity emerged with practices in religion, arts, philosophy, and possibly even athletic competitions.

Byzantine Empire (330-1453)

During this era, Constantinople (as Istanbul was then called) flourished as the center of the Eastern Roman Empire, aka Byzantines. They took on the empire business after the Western Roman Empire collapsed and Byzantium went on to survive for another whole millennia until their ultimate demise in 1453.

Ottoman Empire (1453-1922)

Following the conquest of Constantinople, the Ottomans transformed the city into the heart of their vast empire. They went on to be a super power that rocked Europe, Middle East and North Africa for 600 years until their collapse in WWI.

Thanks for the useful content. I’m planning a trip in late August for 4 mid-age couples from Texas based on your recommendations. Just booked “The Galata Istanbul Hotel – MGallery” and will enjoy the ancient baths inside. Staying for 5 days. Hope to book one of your tours as well. What would you recommend for two different half day tours? Though we would like a rest day in between. Thanks!
